Frome’s monthly market will team up with Garden Day for a market steeped in rural traditions on Sunday 5th May – from Morris women to flower crowns!
Last year, The Frome Independent’s May market took on a “May Day” theme that marked the arrival of summer. The market team worked with Garden Day, a nationwide project that celebrates the benefits and joys of gardening, who ran a flower crown-making workshop that was enjoyed by hundreds of market goers. There was traditional maypole dancing from students at Oakfield school, as well as contemporary Morris dances and demonstrations from Boss Morris, an all-female West Country Morris dancing side who perform at events and festivals across the UK.
The Frome Independent are looking forward to working with Garden Day again this year, along with other local organisations, for the second edition of their May Day-themed market. Boss Morris will be back, along with more maypole dancing by Oakfield students. There will also be family art activities, information on wildlife and gardening from Somerset Wildlife Trust and of course, the ever-popular flower crowns.
Director Tabitha Clayson was thrilled to see so many people wearing flower crowns and enjoying the sunshine at last May’s market. She said, “We are looking forward to working with the Garden Day team again this year after the fantastic turnout we had in 2018, and hope this year’s activities inspire even more of our fellow Frome residents to celebrate their gardens this summer.”
On Sunday 5th May, the Garden Day team will be returning to the pop-up village green (next to Frome Library) with their fresh flower crown workshop. This will run between 10am and 2pm on market day and if you’d like to take part, please register at www.gardenday.co.uk/events to book your free spot. Booking is essential as this workshop was extremely popular last year!
Garden Day started as a Somerset-wide initiative to encourage people to down tools and spend the day with their friends, family and neighbours in the garden, celebrating the joy and benefits that gardens bring us all year round. Following the success of the past two years, Garden Day now be rolling out across the whole of the UK and this year takes place on Sunday 12th May.
Acclaimed gardening expert, Charles Dowding says, “Garden Day is a great opportunity to enjoy our garden work in a more conscious way, see beds and borders from a different perspective and gain inspiration from others.”
In addition to the May Day activities, visitors can expect the usual talented array of designers, makers and craftspeople, food producers, farmers and vintage traders lining the streets of Frome.
