Local care provider, Bluebird Care, is celebrating their 10th anniversary of offering high-quality home care services to Frome and the wider Mendip area.
The company opened its doors in 2014 dedicated to providing ‘good old-fashioned care’ with a friendly, personal service.
“We began Bluebird Care in Frome ten years ago with the goal of helping people remain independent in their own homes,” said owner, Masen Naidoo. “Our primary purpose is to provide care that supports people, including those with Alzheimer’s or dementia, to stay in familiar surroundings, which we believe improves their quality of life.”
Masen emphasises that being in a comfortable, known environment can significantly reduce anxiety and by offering tailored care, it allows people to stay at home and enhances, not just their customers’ independence, but their overall well-being.
Bluebird Care provides a wide range of support, from help with household chores and errands to personal care and even live-in services. The company prides itself on a personalised approach that focuses on maintaining independence for its customers.
“We like to think of ourselves as the ‘Waitrose’ of care – offering a premium, tailored service,” Masen explains. “We don’t come in and take over; we work alongside our customers at a pace that suits them, helping them to remain as independent as possible. Whether it’s assisting with meals, checking on their safety, or simply being a friendly presence, our care is all about supporting our customers on their journey. We’re there to support them in whatever way is needed.”
One aspect that sets Bluebird Care apart is their focus on building relationships with customers, families, and support agencies, creating a support network for each individual, says Masen. Every care plan is carefully personalised, taking into account not only the health needs of the person but also things like their interests, hobbies and life story.
One of Bluebird Care’s distinctive offerings is their ‘Care Assist’ service, where staff conduct regular health checks, including monitoring blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and other key indicators to spot early signs of health deterioration. While they don’t diagnose, this proactive approach helps reduce the burden on GPs and hospitals, and ensures swift action when needed.
To ensure the highest standards of care, Bluebird Care invests heavily in staff training. “We provide a comprehensive training programme at our own training centre and all our staff go through a minimum of two weeks of training before they begin,” says Masen. “This includes both classroom learning and shadowing experienced caregivers to build confidence.
“And we ensure that our staff have the time to travel between customers so that they are not rushing and, crucially, have enough time to during visit to do the things they need to do. We train our staff to give the customer their full attention, and pride ourselves on going above and beyond.”
As in any care profession, recruiting and retaining skilled staff is crucial and Bluebird Care takes pride in treating their team with the same level of care they provide to customers. “Since day one, we’ve called our staff ‘care professionals’; we have never called them ‘carers’, ‘support workers’ or ‘care workers’,” said Masen. “Their job description, their job title, is care professionals, because that’s what they are. They are dedicated professionals doing a challenging and invaluable job.”
Feedback from both staff and customers plays a key role in Bluebird Care’s ongoing success. The company conducts surveys twice a year, with an impressive 99% of respondents recommending the service. “We are always looking to improve,” says Masen. “If any concerns arise, we address them immediately to maintain our high standards.”
Looking ahead, Mason envisions a future where home care becomes increasingly clinically-focused. “We are already expanding into more complex care, including nursing care and child care,” he says. “Home care is evolving, and we’re preparing our team to meet those new challenges. We believe that more people will receive clinical care in their own homes, and that’s where we’re headed.”
