THE Frome Show returned in spectacular style at the weekend, with crowds pouring in from across the country to enjoy the festivities.
The official number of people to visit the show has yet to be confirmed, but the show’s organisers say that the event was “very well supported” and that there was a post-lockdown “buzz” about the showground as another large Frome event made its comeback.
Amongst the attractions enjoyed by visitors were the Global Cheese Awards, livestock and equine showing, live music, an appearance from children’s TV presenters Mr Bloom and Andy Day, arena entertainment, the nation’s favourite French chef, Jean Christophe Novelli, and home and garden competitions.
Show manager, Charlotte O’Neill, told Frome Times, “It went really, really well. We are still waiting on the final numbers, but it was a very good turnout, and very well supported by locals, and by people as far as Manchester, Brighton, Plymouth and Wales – people came from all over!
“There was a very strong buzz about the place, especially when children’s TV presenter Andy Day came on, the children just went mad for him – there were so many that wanted to see him. The Shetland pony racing in the main ring was very popular too! And we had a really good livestock turnout, a really good turnout considering the pandemic.
“My personal highlight was seeing us run a big event in Frome, almost back to normal – the amount of people, the families out smiling and having a good time was so good to see. And all our stands and traders were just so happy to be back out, doing what we love – it was fantastic.”
The show was also a poignant one for president David Millard, who is stepping down from his role and moving to Cornwall to retire.
“David has been involved with the society since 1974,” explained Charlotte. “We presented him with a special silver photo frame in the main ring, that will be filled with a photo taken on the day of David with the ‘supreme champion dairy’ and ‘supreme champion beef’ winners.”
About his last show, David said, “Almost everyone I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed the day, and what I feel is so great, is that whilst retaining agriculture at the heart of the show, there is so much else for the general public to do, experience, and enjoy.

“There is truly something for everyone, not least the children.
“On a personal note I greatly appreciate the kindness shown to me, organising and taking me on a tour of the show handing out the trade rosettes, and so much other help during my term as President.”
