Local campaign group Save Open Spaces Frome is celebrating 10 years since it purchased Whatcombe Fields and is inviting the community to an anniversary picnic to mark the milestone.
Whatcombe Fields and is inviting the community to an anniversary picnic to mark the milestone.
The picnic is due to be held on Saturday 17th May at the Sledging Field at 12.30pm, marking a decade since the group – which aims to protect Frome’s green spaces – saved the fields from potential development.
To save the fields – located between Whatcombe Road and Jack’s Lane – the community came together to help SoS Frome raise £325,000. The greenfield site had been put up for auction and advertised as having ‘development potential’, but the funds ensured the land could be protected for people and nature forever.
It has now been a decade since the group raised enough funds to purchase the land, securing it for the people of Frome.
Director of SoS Frome, Andy Jones, said, “Come along to this informal DIY picnic – bring your own blankets, food and drink. Access is by walking from the top of Whatcombe Road, Vernal Lane, or via the cycle path at Low Water. The Sledging Field is adjacent to Whatcombe Road (limited roadside parking available).
“Please note: this is farmland grazed by cattle and cut for hay, and there are no washing or toilet facilities available. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.”
Anyone can become a shareholder of SoS Frome and buy a ‘stake’ in these beautiful fields. Shares are just £50 each – contact sosfrome@outlook.com for more information.
