Residents are being invited to have their say on whether Frome’s school system should change from a three-tier to a two-tier structure.
Somerset Council has launched a formal consultation on proposals that could see 18 Frome schools move from the current first, middle and upper school model to a primary and secondary system.
Under the plans, the authority is suggesting two secondary schools for the area, 14 primary schools and additional provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
An informal consultation earlier this year received 800 responses. Of those, 71% supported moving to a two-tier system, 22% opposed the change and 7% were unsure.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council said, “The number of school-age children in the Frome area is changing, with fewer younger children expected in the coming years. This proposal aims to ensure there are the right number of school places in the right locations, support the long-term sustainability of local schools and meet the needs of children and families within Frome wherever possible.”
The plans also include adjusting school capacity to match future demand, making better use of existing buildings, including potential new SEND provision, and using developer contributions to help fund any changes.
Residents can find out more at a series of question and answer sessions in Frome where the formal proposals will be presented by education stakeholders.
The first sessions are on Tuesday 9th June at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Further sessions will be held on Wednesday 17th June at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. The sessions will take place at Frome Town Hall and booking is not required.
