WITH the publication of the fact that Avon & Somerset enforcement teams record more speeding motorists, one every 3 minutes, the highest in England and Wales, it should come as no surprise that the speed enforcement unit is about to embark on their latest crackdown on speeding motorists in the Frome area.
Ashley Reay, Mendip Mendip Community speed watch teams/police volunteer said, “By the time this article is published, then the campaign will be well under way, with teams of enforcement vehicles checking speeds on most of Frome’s roads and the local area.
“We really cannot have vehicles travelling at speeds up to 75mph in a 30mph zone, as we have recorded recently.
“Information from speed indication devices has shown that many thousands of vehicles are still travelling at speeds almost double the posted speed limit. Noticeable black spots are Bath Road, Old Ford Hill and Berkley School, and the public can expect to see enforcement officers at these sites almost daily.
“Fines now total well over £1,000,000 in the past three years and a request has now been sent to Mendip District Council to install fixed speed cameras at known high speeding sites.
“Unfortunately,” said Ashley, “the public response to reducing speeding is like the truth; ‘Everyone wants it but no one wants to hear it,’ so the message again is for motorists to slow down and get to your destination safely, avoid prosecution, and think of others on the road.”
