THE lady captain of Orchardleigh Golf Club, Loes de Kleuver, has recently organised a round of crazy golf for her Captain’s Day.
The 24 ladies went out in threes with stableford scoring but the round was played with some very different and unusual formats.
On the second hole it was teeing off with a hockey stick, third hole no penalty if your ball went in the pond and on the sixth hole teeing off was done blind folded, though two attempts were allowed.
The seventh hole flummoxed many ladies, as the challenge was ‘nearest the hole’, not nearest the pin. The catch being the hole was nowhere near the pin!
The ninth hole was teeing off with a putter and despite attempting a full swing the ball generally didn’t reach the fairway. The 11th and 16th holes started with a throw of the ball rather than a tee shot and the 13th was alternately playing a shot and a throw, which in some cases meant getting the ball down the hole with a throw!
The final hole was played with a yellow ball, which played to the green without losing it in the water, was rewarded with double stableford points, a much-needed bonus at the end of a somewhat challenging round. But despite this, some good scores came in as both Anne Regler and Jan Light managed to win the individual score prize each with 35 points.
Pat Pitt won nearest the hole on the seventh. The longest throw for the over 70s was won by Diana Bullock and the under 69s by Lorraine Collings. The team score prize with 82 points went to Sue Marshall, Sue Chalker and Pat Jones. The prizes were awarded in the clubhouse after an excellent buffet lunch which was much enjoyed by everyone, including a small group of ladies who didn’t play golf but joined in the meal. Some of the non-playing ladies kindly manned the halfway house, where some delicious goodies sustained everyone during their round.
