Critchill Court is hosting a coffee morning to raise funds for Dementia UK, as part of their ‘Time for a cuppa’ campaign.

The residents and staff at the Frome care home would like to extend the invitation to the local community to boost the fundraising for this worthy cause. The event will be held at the home in Lynwood Close, Frome on Friday 4th March at 10.30am.

Speaking on the event, manager Karen Reeves said, “We would love to see some new faces at our coffee morning on 4th March. As well as tea, coffee and soft drinks, we are also hoping to have some homemade cakes for sale.”

Somerset Care is one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare providers in Southern England. The company provides over 29,000 hours of community care every week of the year to people in their own homes, and through their residential care services they operate 30 care homes which provide residential and nursing care for over 1,550 residents.

  • Cycling workshop to help women ‘get back on the saddle’

A workshop to help women rediscover cycling or try it for the first time is set to run on International Women’s Day.

‘Back on the Saddle’, is being hosted by Frome Community Bike Project and will be a relaxed, drop-in session taking place on Sunday 8th March from 10am to 1pm at the workshop at Station Approach.

Led by experienced female volunteers, the event aims to be relaxed, encouraging and judgement-free.

Organisers say, “It will be focused on building confidence, sharing information and meeting others in a welcoming environment.

“Whether your bike’s been gathering dust or you’re feeling a bit nervous about getting started, you’ll learn how to give your bike a simple safety check, get tips on safer, quieter routes around Frome and have the chance to meet new cycling buddies. You don’t need to have a bike to take part, just come and find out about Frome Community Bike Project and ask anything cycling-related."

Zardoz has been a well-known name in the world of vintage paperbacks for over 30 years, specialising in science fiction, mystery and classic Penguin and Pan editions, and more recently added a wide range of music, movie and pop culture treasures.

“Our last book fair proved really popular and this time, we have more stock and an even greater variety,” said owner Maurice Flanagan, pictured."

  • Disco fun run for cancer charity

A disco fun run to raise money for cancer counselling charity We Hear You (WHY) will take place on Thursday 12th March.

The event is organised by local mother and son duo Rose Hiron-Grimes and Keinan Cooper, who are running the London Marathon this year for WHY.

Participants will meet at The Crown Inn at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. The 5km flat route will see local DJ collective BassBeatz turn the streets of Keyford into a moving dance floor. DJ Lloydy will lead the run on his custom-built music bike, providing a disco soundtrack to dance, run, wheel, or walk along the route. There is a suggested donation of £10, which includes glow-in-the-dark accessories.

Rose and Keinan have both seen friends benefit from WHY’s professional counselling and have experienced the impact of cancer bereavements themselves. Earlier this year, WHY launched an urgent fundraising appeal to raise £55,000 by the end of March to avoid closure.

  • Screening to honour acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker

Film fans in Keyford are holding a special event on 5th March to mark the death of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, who died in January.

The event will be a screening of Tarr’s award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies at The Crown Inn.

Organiser Simon Keyes said, “Werckmeister Harmonies traces the collapse of the social order in a remote Hungarian town following the arrival of a sinister circus featuring a giant whale.

“Renowned as a pioneer of ‘slow cinema’, his films are characterised by long takes, elaborate camera movements and stark black-and-white cinematography. They include The Turin Horse and the seven-and-a-half-hour masterpiece Sátántangó. Keyford Kino will be screening his award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies (2000)."

“Back by popular demand, the showdown events are a highlight of the wrestling calendar,” said organiser Stuart Natt. “Tickets are already running low as wrestling fans of all ages will again pack the popular venue to witness the high flying, body slamming action that only CSF Wrestling brings!

“A huge line up of top names are Ready to Rumble including the debuts of both Rhiannon Jade and Armina Lily as women’s wrestling makes a welcome return."

  • Fate of 1,700 Frome homes to be settled around Easter

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

The fate of a planned development of 1,700 new homes in Frome will be settled around Easter, the Planning Inspectorate has confirmed.

The Selwood Garden Community (SGC) envisions the creation of new homes on agricultural land between the B3090 Marston Lane and the busy A361, along with commercial space, two care homes, a local centre (which shops and a possible medical centre), a primary school and a range of public open spaces and sports facilities.

A public inquiry into the plans was held in Shepton Mallet in early-August 2025, with planning inspector Stephen Normington hearing from multiple local and professional witnesses and undertaking an official site visit.

Eight months on from this hearing, the Planning Inspectorate has confirmed that Stephen Normington’s report has been formally submitted to housing secretary Steve Reed MP – with a final decision expected by early-April.

  • Bumper-packed events at this year’s Kindness Festival

The Frome Kindness Festival has a jam-packed line-up of fun events in this year’s programme.

Running from 14th to 21st March, festival highlights include the Annual Kindness Festival Lecture with time traveller and community activist Rob Hopkins at The Memorial Theatre. Rob will transport the audience to 2036, inviting residents to explore a future society reoriented around kindness and care.

A line-up of top comedians will bring laughter to the Kindness Festival for ‘Random Acts of Comedy’ at The Tunnels, hosted by Adam Grierson. Creative writing tutor Derek Niemann and his photographer wife Sarah are running a ‘Write to be Kind’ workshop celebrating the generosity of spirit within us all. Poet, comedian and musician John Hegley is joined by Angie Arnold and Mike Tomes for their mid-March musings at The Good Heart.

The Grief Opera, written and composed by Nigel Linacre and Vladimir Miller, will shine a spotlight on suicide, the most common cause of death in young men. Its creators hope it will enable people to have potentially life-saving conversations and to work with their grief. The Frome Grief Network will also be hosting a welcoming community event on the first day of the festival, offering a space to talk openly about grief and loss.

  • Monthly veterans’ breakfast to launch in Frome

A monthly breakfast for veterans to share experiences and make connections is due to launch in Frome.

It will run on the first Saturday of every month at the Cross Keys pub in Blatchbridge, bringing Frome veterans together to meet other like-minded people.

The first breakfast will take place on 4th April, following the success of a similar event in Warminster, where organisers saw a need to start another group.

Organiser Alex Anderson, who runs the Warminster Veterans’ Breakfast, said, “The main aim of the breakfast club is the welfare of its members. The club in Frome aims to ensure that no veteran ever feels alone.”

The Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club is a national organisation, providing a supportive and welcoming environment for veterans of the armed forces.
