AFTER months of rehearsing, the wait is finally over as the curtain goes up on Thursday 3rd August for the opening night of CATS at the Frome Memorial Theatre.
Frome Musical Theatre Company’s Youth Section Spellbound have worked incredibly hard to put the show together in a week-long workshop and the cast can’t wait to perform to a packed audience.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ by T. S. Eliot, ‘CATS’ is set amongst a larger than life junkyard playground and is alive with favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks and features unforgettable songs including Memory and Jellicle Ball.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
“This show promises lots of energy, mysterious characters, mischievous costumes and of course lots of super singing and dancing from our 57 youngsters!,” says Sarah Bolton. “The show runs from Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th August at 7pm with a matinee also on Saturday 5th at 2pm.
Spellbound was launched in 1989 to offer young people an introduction to musical theatre and provide a pipeline of young people into the main group’s productions. Many ‘Spellbounders’ have gone on to perform in FMTC pantomimes and May shows as well as taking technical roles backstage.
