The next talk in the Frome Society’s programme of Saturday afternoon lectures will be given by Marianne Cartwright-Hignett on Saturday 16th November, focusing on the story of Iford.
Marianne, the current chatelaine of Iford Manor, has spent the last few years researching the history of the hamlet. An economics graduate from Cambridge University, she specialised in Economic History and has always had a passion for it. She is currently building up the archives at Iford, as well as rewriting the guidebook and an audio guide for visitors.
“Originally settled by the Romans, the first known mention of Iford was in the Domesday Book,” explained a member of the group, John Peverley. “Iford is located on an important river crossing, and its story spans centuries, encompassing industries and communities, with some fascinating individuals at the heart of it.
“This evolution of Iford gives rise to the unique architecture and heritage collection that we see today, as well as the wider valley, which has largely remained unchanged for centuries. After bringing the story of Iford to life for you, a walk through the Iford Valley will never be quite the same again.”
The Frome Society’s lectures take place in the Assembly Rooms at the rear of Frome Memorial Theatre (BA11 1EB), starting at 2.30pm. Visitors are welcome but are asked to pay an entry fee of £5.
