Fair Homes Project begins community consultation on social housing plans for Frome

Members of the Fair Homes Project have been consulting and engaging with local residents in Frome about their plans for urgently-needed social housing provision.

The project reports, “A number of potential plots have been identified across several sites in the popular Somerset town, and the project team are ensuring residents will be part of the conversation and help to shape the scheme.

“Some 500 households are currently seeking a social home in Frome. The Fair Homes Project – a partnership between Frome Area Community Land Trust (FACLT), Selwood Housing Group (a not-for-profit housing association), and Mendip District Council – aims to build up to 30 new high-quality, fair rent, family homes, for those in desperate housing need.

“A website was launched last week (week commencing 24th May) attracting more than 100 comments about the plans. The Fair Homes Project website provides full details and location maps, plus there’s an area where people can leave their feedback. Those seeking social housing in Frome are particularly encouraged to visit the website, where they will find details on how to register their interest online.

“Whilst the online consultation ends on June 11th, 2021, this deadline is for the initial, first responses only. The consultation will continue, with a public event pencilled in for July – details to follow.”

Chair of FACLT, Roger Saunders said, “These are very early days. This is about initial, community engagement, prior to any formal consultation or planning submissions.

“The online consultation ends on June 11th, but then we are planning in-person consultations with residents covering each of the small sites. There will be many opportunities for residents to have their say.

“With our partners at Mendip and Selwood, we want to deliver high-quality social rented homes to this community. To do that, we recognise we must be totally transparent about our potential plans. We must bring the community with us and we want them to help shape social housing in Frome.”

Paul Walsh, group development director at Selwood Housing said, “We’ve already received lots of feedback on our website with many constructive suggestions submitted. We thank people for taking the time to get in touch and will respond to everyone who contacts us after this first stage of the consultation closes.

“We will continue to engage with the community online until June 11th – but that’s not the end of it. The consultation continues, and as the pandemic restrictions are removed, we are planning public meetings this summer in Frome about these sites.

“There’s been positivity about this project. People in Frome are naturally protective of their green spaces, but there is compromise and compassion there too. Many are thanking us for our attempts to tackle the urgent housing problem.”

Leader of Mendip District Council, cllr Ros Wyke said, “News of the end of a ban on evictions yesterday (May 31st), first introduced in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, and extended several times, will put further pressure on the housing crisis.

“Projects like this are needed more than ever to help those local families seeking quality houses with fair rents. Everyone deserves the right to a place they can call home.”

Subject to further consultation and planning consent, it’s hoped the small-scale social housing plans proposed in the Fair Homes Project can be delivered within the next two years.

Visit the website – register your interest, and have your say: selwoodhousing. com/fairhomesproject

Don’t forget to complete the Housing Needs Survey!

The project team continues, “Please take the time to complete the independent survey as it will help inform future planning and give a realistic view of what housing difficulties residents of Frome are currently having.

“It will collect vital information about those in housing need, including those who have not signed up to Homefinder Somerset.”

The Housing Needs Survey – as found in your Frome Times – will be available online for 3 weeks from June 7th.

  • Wildlife favourite Michaela Strachan set for Frome show

Marking 40 years in the public eye, wildlife TV star Michaela Strachan is bringing her brand-new theatre show to Frome Memorial Theatre next month.

From The Wide Awake Club to The Really Wild Show and Springwatch, Michaela’s new theatre show laughs at the chaos of TV, celebrates the beauty of nature and reflects on what it means to grow up – and grow older – on screen.

The show will be at Frome Memorial Theatre on Tuesday 21st April at 7.30pm.

Organisers say, “It’s a high-energy, funny and heart-warming journey through four decades of conservation and re-invention. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be upstaged by an elephant, wrangle the likes of Chris Packham, or ice skate on national TV looking like Julie Andrews, then this show is for you. Not Just a Wild Life promises an evening of inspiration, nostalgia and genuine connection – for nature nerds, nostalgia lovers and anyone who’s ever wondered how a rubber chicken can change the course of your life."

  • Celebrated local artist’s collection to feature in Dore & Rees Spring auction

The collection of a local Frome artist and collector will be offered for sale at the Dore & Rees Spring Interiors Auction next month.

The auction of Lucy Miranda Sipe’s possessions will take place at the firm’s Frome saleroom on Wednesday 15th April, and includes mid-century furniture, tribal jewellery, spiritual objects and a little bit of witchcraft!

“Lucy Miranda Sipe (1957-2025) was a local artist, botanist and collector,” said Guy Tayler, Head of Interiors at Dore & Rees. “She was creative in almost every field – an illustrator, knitter, jewellery maker, needlewoman, writer and gardener.

“The first thing you saw on entering her home was an eight-foot-high tree made from rope and wood hung with vintage glass decorations. On closer inspection and on reading her accompanying annotated notebook it transpired that she had hand-painted each decoration and detailed every design choice along with the prices and provenance of each figure, and its significance in Eastern European folklore. It’s a completely extraordinary work of art."

The new collection features various Laura Ashley prints on some of their dog walking products, including harnesses with a discreet pocket to safely house an Apple AirTag or similar tracking device, waterproof leads and coordinated dog blankets.

Co-founders Brad and Kayla said this was an ‘exciting milestone’ for the business.

Brad said, “This partnership represents a significant achievement for our small independent business, bringing together a heritage British brand with our locally designed and produced pet accessories.”

  • Acoustic tribute to Joni Mitchell at Cheese and Grain

An intimate acoustic tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell is coming to Frome on 17th April.

The show, ‘This Flight Tonight – the Songs of Joni Mitchell’, will be presented by a five-piece band.

Organisers say, “Established in early 2023, acclaimed songwriters Zervas and Pepper present the show, featuring songs such as ‘California’, ‘Blue’, ‘Woodstock’ ‘Both Sides Now’, ‘Carey’, ‘Coyote’, ‘A Case Of You’, and many more.

“Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential artists of the modern age, rising to stardom in the late 1960s; her music and songwriting is the jewel in the crown of the Woodstock generation. Bursting onto the scene with a sound entirely her own, Joni earned the respect of her musical peers and the love of her audiences worldwide."

  • Frome Drama Club to stage first 80th anniversary show

A local drama group is set to celebrate its 80th anniversary with an upcoming play in April.

Frome Drama will perform Jack Absolute Flies Again from 16th to 18th April at the Merlin Theatre. The performance will be the first of three plays marking the group’s 80th anniversary.

Organisers say, “Written by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris, this is a completely hilarious farce set in 1940 at RAF Fontwell during the Battle of Britain. The play is very loosely based on Sheridan’s The Rivals, and features many of the same characters, notably the world-famous Mrs Malaprop, whose mangled verbiage spawned the phrase malapropism. But this version is faster, ruder, funnier and altogether very different from the original.”

The show is recommended for ages 14+. Organisers say, “Come along and support local people in local theatre and keep theatre alive.”

  • Drive-thru outlets planned near Frome

Two drive-thru units, including a coffee shop and a restaurant, along with a petrol station, shop and dog park could be built near Frome.

A planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council by Warleigh Capital, Spectrum Southern Ltd and White Row Country Foods Ltd. It seeks permission to develop approximately 2.55 hectares of currently undeveloped land to the south of Old Warminster Road at White Row Farm. The site is just off the A36, with access to Frome via the White Row Farm roundabout onto the A361.

The developer says the scheme will create 45 jobs and provide an “accessible local service for the local community”, including space for a dog park.

The development would also include an EV charging hub and 70 parking spaces.

  • Record number of teams take part in Clive Lewis Tag Rugby Festival

Young players from across the area took part in the annual Clive Lewis Schools Tag Festival, hosted by Frome Rugby Club last week.

The popular event, played in honour of the late Clive Lewis, a much-loved Frome RFC club legend and local schoolteacher, welcomed the largest number of teams in two decades, with 12 teams taking part. 129 tries were scored in 20 eight-minute games.

“This festival is often the first experience these children have of any competitive activity with other schools,” said Neil Warnock from Frome Rugby Club. “The evidence was clear – they embraced it and had a great time, which is exactly what it’s all about.”

In the Years 5 and 6 competition, Selwood’s three teams – the Bears, Wolves and Leopards – put on an outstanding display, scoring 40 tries between them and each topping their respective pools. Westbury Leigh matched the Leopards in Pool C, while the final between Selwood’s Bears and Wolves ended in a thrilling 3–3 draw.

  • Frome residents gear up for London Marathon

Frome residents are preparing to take on the London Marathon, running 26 miles across the city to raise funds for various charities.

Callum Green, Rose Hiron-Grimes, Keinan Cooper and Anna Cooper are among the residents who have been fundraising and training for the gruelling challenge taking place on 26th April.

Callum Green is raising funds for The Lullaby Trust, an infant support charity working to prevent unexpected deaths in infancy and support infant health; Rose Hiron-Grimes and Keinan Cooper, a mother and son duo, are running to raise funds for We Hear You (WHY) to support the cancer counselling charity’s urgent fundraising appeal; and Anna Cooper is running for Mind, in memory of her 22-year-old friend Teilo How, who died by suicide.

Anna Cooper, who is a practice manager at Eyetech Opticians, said, “This will be one of the biggest challenges of my life, but I think of Teilo all the time when I’m running and that keeps me going. If I can turn this effort into something positive – into hope, help and change – then every step will be worth it.”
