From The Mayor

Anita is away enjoying some sunshine, so she’s asked me, Cllr Fiona Barrows, to stand in and write the mayor’s column this week.

Like Anita, I was recently elected to a new role as chair and leader of Frome Town Council. Usually in a town council, the ‘chair is the mayor’ but at Frome Town Council we’re taking a different approach.

Anita, as deputy chair of Frome Town Council, is taking on the civic leadership role as mayor; attending events, meeting residents and community groups and writing this column (usually!)

My role as chair and leader is about political leadership and chairing council meetings. I’m looking forward to working closely with Anita this year – we share an enthusiasm for giving young people a real voice in our town.

Like many of you, I’m struggling with everything that’s going on in the world right now. It feels incredibly dark and difficult, as if we’ve somehow lost our sense of humanity. We’re facing enormous crises as a global community in the form of climate breakdown, ecological emergency, and ever-growing inequality. Yet rather than coming together to find solutions, we’re waging war and committing atrocious acts of violence against one another.

We can’t ignore it; we can’t turn a blind eye, and yet I know how helpless and powerless it can make us all feel. What can we do? We do need to raise awareness of these atrocities and do whatever we can to ensure that the voices of violence are not the only ones being heard. But we also need to do what we can, here in Frome, to spread kindness and community. And we need to remember to be gentle and kind to ourselves, too. There is so much division in the world right now and our national politics are cleaving us apart rather than bringing us together, trying to turn us on each other.

My favourite film is Pride and the reason I love it so much is that it portrays two communities that, on the surface, couldn’t be more different, who discover that they have more in common than they’d realised and can use their voices to amplify each other.

We have to do what we can to bridge divides and find the common ground that unites us. The story of Frome resident Jo Berry, who has just received a CBE for her peace work, is an inspiring example of what people can achieve when they turn away from hatred and choose empathy and understanding, even in the hardest circumstances. You can find Jo helping to run regular Let’s Talk sessions at the town hall. If restorative conversation and active empathy can create an understanding between Jo and the IRA operative who planted the bomb that killed her father, there is almost nothing it can’t do.

Kindness to yourself can takes many forms. I have an allotment here in Frome, and while it’s not being quite as well taken care of since I became a councillor, it is my happy place. Not just because of the time outside and hands in the soil, but because it is a place where people from all over Frome with all different types of backgrounds come together and help each other to grow things. It reminds me of the unifying power of growing things together, whether that’s vegetables, an event, or a project.

As many of you will know, we are currently discussing the future of Badgers Hill. At times the divisions have felt hard to overcome and yet we all ultimately want the same thing: a thriving Badgers Hill, home of football in our community. At a recent meeting, every stakeholder representative spoke passionately about football and its ability to bring people together. We hope going forward that passion can bridge current divides and unify the town.

  • Mayor’s Christmas message

At this festive season, I’d like to thank you for all the wonderful things you do in this town, that contribute to our community.

My thanks to those of you involved in businesses and charities who cater for our needs and to those groups who find ways to help others in difficulty, whether financially, mentally or emotionally.

To all of you at the hospital, the nursing homes, the medical centre and all our emergency services, our lovely carers and volunteers who give up their time, thank you for looking after us.

To all those associated with churches, choirs, theatres, music, education, transport, hobby and sports groups, who cater for all our needs and interests, you are appreciated more than you know.

  • Christmas comes to Frome!.

Christmas has arrived in Frome with festive lights, fundraising displays and community events across the town.

Thousands of residents filled the town centre for the annual lantern parade and Christmas lights switch-on in November, marking the start of the festivities. Since then, a range of Christmas events has been taking place, including local residents holding their own Christmas lights displays to raise funds for charities such as Fair Frome.

Christ Church hosted a Christmas tree festival, with various groups decorating trees and often raising funds for local causes. The Frome Lions and Rotary Club Santa Float has been travelling around residential streets, also raising money for charity.

After three sell-out shows, The Animal Guyz are coming back to Frome’s Merlin Theatre in the New Year with their wildly entertaining and educational show.

The Animal Guyz: Amazing Animals will be at the Merlin Sunday 8th February.

“This spectacular performance is dedicated to ‘all creatures great and small’ and features life-sized crocodiles, sloths, reindeer, penguins, orangutans – and even a spraying skunk bursting onto the stage right before your eyes, and no real animals are used!” said Craig, the original creator and Animal Guy performer. • Golf club raises over £90,000 for charity

A golf club in Frome has raised more than £90,000 for charitable causes since it began fundraising in 2010.

Orchardleigh Golf Club has held a series of events over the years, including competitions and raffles, in support of Dorothy House Hospice Care, as well as other charities such as Somerset Air Ambulance, Prostate Cancer UK and Diabetes UK.

Most recently, the club held a cup day, raising £3,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care. The hospice provides personalised care to people in the community nearing the end of life. Club member Jim Worsley presented a cheque to Dorothy House fundraiser Katherine Bowhay and thanked sponsors and players for their support.

  • Ukulele group raise funds for local causes

Frome’s popular ukulele group, The Frukes, recently raised £1,200 at a charity gig.

The sold-out performance at the Silk Mill raised the funds for local charities Time is Precious, which supports children and their families in hospitals and at home, and Songs for the Memory, a singing group for people with dementia.

“It was a great evening,” said group member Roger Southard. “We played a mix of old and new songs, we had a bar, and we played two one-hour sets. It was fantastic.”

Thank you so much to everyone who joined the town in marking the start of Christmas on 21st November what a wonderful night it was! And thank you to the organisers and the many who turned out for a brilliant Cobble Wobble on 23rd November too!

As promised, here is a little background on some more of my councillor colleagues.

Andy Jones has interests in education, finances and the Frome Festival. Polly Lamb, Councillor for Park Ward, is heavily involved in the planning team and eagerly supports women’s voices within the council.

Lisa Merryweather is passionate about mental health and supporting young people. Sara Butler fervently supports the ecology and natural habitats for wildlife. Anne Hills is heavily involved in repurposing digital items, she is the instigator of our White Ribbon campaign and worked with Prosper Frome to campaign for our long-awaited banking hub, now happily dispensing cash and serving residents.

  • Dementia singing group receives Christmas funding boost

A singing group for people with dementia in Frome has received a funding boost from a local charity to support their Christmas celebration.

Songs for the Memory received £750 from the Frome Masons and will use the funds to host a Christmas lunch for members.

One of the organisers of Songs for the Memory, Debby Webster, said, “The Masons’ support really helps us to keep our Songs for the Memory singing sessions free for the local community, something we are very passionate about.”

Songs for the Memory is a singing group for people with dementia and memory problems, and their carers. They meet every Tuesday at the Masonic Hall from 1.30pm to 3pm.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Simple ways to support hedgehogs

At our last Wild Bunch gathering we were joined by Jennie from Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab, who shared her expertise on how we can all make our gardens safer for hedgehogs.

Inspired by her advice, here are some easy, practical ways to support hedgehogs that visit our gardens. One of the most valuable things we can do is create connected, wildlife-friendly spaces.

Hedgehogs roam up to a mile each night looking for food, so enabling them to move freely between gardens makes a huge difference. A small hole in a fence or wall of around 13cm by 13cm (the size of a CD) is ideal for a ‘hedgehog highway’. Chat to your neighbours to see if you can link up several gardens to form a safe route. Hedgehogs are good climbers, so if you have a stone wall creating a ‘staircase’ with rocks or logs both sides can help them access your garden.

Our next Wild Bunch gathering will be at the town hall on Thursday 18th December from 1.30pm to 3pm. This will be a relaxed festive meet-up over a mince pie, with an opportunity to plant a small pot of native Tenby daffodils to take home as a Christmas gift to nature at your doorstep.
