There’s still time to enter the Carnival

It’s not too late to consider putting an entry into the Frome Carnival for either the afternoon or evening procession on Saturday 19th September.

There are a range of categories for all kinds of entries and a chance to win the ‘Home in Frome’ trophy for local, Frome-themed entries. Contact the procession secretary Darren Cox on 01373 670188.

We need your help

We are in need of people to help on carnival day, selling programmes, collecting money, crowd stewards and road closure marshals. If you can help, please contact us using the details below.

For general enquiries please contact us at info@fromecarnival.org.uk; alternatively our organisers can be contacted directly using the details below:

Sharon Forrester – Minute Secretary and website organiser – 01225 751418;

Mr Darren Cox – procession organiser -01373 670188;

Mrs Mandy Morgan –  judging organiser 07727135968/mandy_morgan@live.co.uk

June Barnes – chairman – 01373 461625.

All about your Carnival

The Frome Carnival association is divided into three groups; the Carnival Committee, the Charities Committee and the Trustees of the Association.

There are different members in each group, although some members serve on both of the first two groups. The Carnival Committee is involved in actually arranging a carnival and raising money for charity. They organise the choosing of the adults’ and children’s Carnival Queens, the Miss Teenager and Carnival Gran.

They arrange the printing and distribution of Carnival entry forms and the sorting of those entries into groups with marshals; they prepare the programme, supported by local advertising, and arrange other entertainments during the week. The committee also deal with advertising in the local press or radio, prepare the park site for the children’s parade and arrange the decoration of the children’s float and adults’ Carnival Queen floats; write endless letters, including those for marshals and judges from other carnivals and arrange to look after them and feed them between the two parades. And then, the day after the Carnival — count all those coins!!

The money that has been collected is then handed to the Charities Committee which uses it throughout the year to give help to those who are in need in the Frome area and surrounding villages. The cases are suggested by doctors, health visitors, the CAB and individuals, and are carefully investigated by the committee members. Recommendations are then made to the trustees for approval. Privacy and confidentiality are very important and great care is taken to ensure that your money is put to the best possible use.

The Carnival Association help by supplying food, heating, bedding, transport and all manner of home comforts. It may provide wheelchairs and holiday breaks; and in recent years has donated health and educational aids to several groups in the area. Perhaps this gives you an idea of the work involved with raising money for this charity. The Carnival is run by a very small committee which is always keen to hear from anyone wishing to join them. It is not hard work, the committee meets once a month, usually on a Monday. There are many ways in which YOU could help. If you feel you would like to come to one of our meetings, or would like to offer help on Carnival Day only, please get in touch.

If you know of anyone in need of help, (many people in real need are reluctant to come forward), please contact us

Where to see this year’s Carnival

2.30PM: Afternoon
Procession Route
Victoria Park gate, up Weymouth Road, left into Somerset Road, left into Butts Hill, Wesley Slope, left into Christchurch Street West, left into Weymouth Road and into Park via Weymouth Road park gates.

7.00PM: Evening
Procession Route
Route begins at junction of Manor Road with The Butts, proceeds along The Butts, Butts Hill, Welsey Slope, Bath Street, Market Place, North Parade, Berkley Road, Badgers Hill and finishes by the Football Ground.

Disabled viewing
There is a reserved area with seats for disabled viewing located at the junction of Rossiters Road and The Butts, (approach from The Beehive crossroads and park in Rossiters Road.)

Please leave room for the Carnival

FROME Carnival Committee is urging people to be mindful of where they park next weekend, after last year’s procession was disrupted by parked cars.

The carnival committee has asked that residents and visitors park their cars considerately, and keep the roads clear to make way for carnival floats. Bear in mind that a float as big as a lorry may need to fit through the space.

The afternoon procession last year could not complete its route as planned because vehicles were parked on either side of the road and the passage was too narrow for floats to pass through.

  • ‘Feed it Forwards’ scheme launches to raise vital funds for food bank resources

Over 30 local bars, restaurants and cafés have joined forces with Fair Frome for a week-long ‘Feed it Forwards’ scheme to raise money for essential food supplies to support individuals and families in the town.

The scheme, organised by Fair Frome, will run from 21st to 29th June. Local eateries and cafés will have collection pots on tables, inviting people to donate whatever they can.

Senior coordinator for Fair Frome, Lenka Grimes, said the scheme has been launched in the week before Glastonbury Festival, when the town is usually busy with visitors.

“Last year, Fair Frome distributed 1,391 food parcels and served over 7,000 hot meals and lunches to those in need,” said Lenka.

Fair Frome runs the town’s food bank, as well as other projects including Food @ Five, the Furniture and Baby Basics Bank, the Assistance Scheme, the ‘Grab and Go’ breakfast bags, and a community pantry."

  • Local folk singer launches new album in aid of Dorothy House

Local folk singer-songwriter Sue Harding is celebrating the launch of her new album, The World, with a midsummer concert raising funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care.

Set in The Bennett Centre, guests are encouraged to bring drinks and snacks and settle in for the evening as the light fades into gentle midsummer dusk, on Saturday 21st June.

Organisers say, “Sue Harding is a West Country singer, songwriter and guitar player with a unique voice, range and heartfelt delivery which combine to create a mystically enchanting sound with soul-stirring elegance. There is also a retro sensibility to much of her music that references the songwriting of the 1960s and 70s folk revival.”

  • Frome’s teenage superbike star competes on national stage

A teenage superbike rider from Frome is making waves on the national stage as he competes in the British Superteen Championship - the country’s premier superbike racing series for young riders.
17-year-old Casey Sparey has been racing since the age of four and is now competing in the championship which shines a light on the stars of tomorrow and gives young riders, aged between 15 and 20, a chance to race in front of huge crowds at the best circuits in the UK. The series runs alongside the British Superbike Championship and lays the foundations for a potential career as a future Superbike championship rider. This season, Casey has already competed at Oulton Park in Cheshire, and Donington Park in Leicestershire and is currently preparing for the next round of the championship, set to take place this Saturday 22nd June at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk.
“Everybody in the world wants to race in this championship because it’s the championship to be in – it’s very competitive and prestigious,” said Casey’s dad, Neil, who is also a former racer.

  • Sisters’ fundraising mission raises over £3,000 for cancer support

Two sisters from Frome and a team of friends have raised over £3,000 for a local cancer support charity by cycling from Frome to the Royal United Hospital (RUH), and completing equivalent laps of the Old Showfield. Esme Spicer, seven, and Olivia Spicer, 12, took on the challenge alongside friends and dads to raise funds for the charity that supported Esme when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma – a type of sarcoma cancer that affects the skeletal muscles – in August 2021, just before her fourth birthday. The money raised will go to the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, a small charity run entirely by volunteers which supports the work of cancer services at the RUH in Bath.
“They do brilliant things for both children’s and adult cancer care in Bath and the surrounding areas,” said the girls’ mum, Anne Spicer. “This includes funding a paediatric oncology nurse who can visit children in the community so they can spend more time at home just being children.”
With the support of the charity, Esme’s treatment has included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery at the RUH and Bristol Children’s Hospital.

The revised proposal by Badgers Hill Ltd (BHL), the group behind the plan, sets out a detailed vision for the stadium’s future, promising guaranteed access for local teams, strong community governance, and significant financial and social benefits for the town. • Spotlight on local housing – Building Social Homes, a moral and social responsibility

A column by Frome Area Community Land Trust

To live in a safe, secure home is a basic human right; we all need a decent, affordable place to call home – it’s the foundation for our lives.

A recognised route out of poverty is living in a social rented home. Social homes are deliberately more affordable than private rented homes and provide a more secure, long-term way for people to put down roots and be part of their community.

That’s why we need to do our bit in Frome to support plans for building more social homes.

The harsh reality for those needing a social home in Frome. (Data from Homefinder Somerset)

Right now, nine households from Frome are homeless and living in temporary accommodation.
