Frome Drama’s latest production, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, is coming to the Merlin Theatre this month.
Based on a book written in 1914 by Robert Tressell, it has been described by many as a novel everyone should read. Now, Frome Drama is bringing to life Stephen Lowe’s 1978 dramatisation of this seminal work.
It is the story of a group of painters and decorators working in Edwardian England, living in near poverty, exploited by the wealthy owners, struggling to earn enough to have the “necessities of life.” The play follows the painters as they transform the mayor’s house, among stories and arguments as they journey towards a new understanding.
The play is directed by veteran Andy Cork, who has wanted to direct it for some time. “It’s a phenomenal play,” says Andy. “A really profound piece of theatre told through humour and wit while also portraying the grimness of the world. It is remarkable and poignant how relatable the piece is, despite it being over a century old.”
The cast includes Liz Hume, Terry Butler, Tabitha Bradley, Martyn Jessop, Sophie Turner, Stephen Kebbell and John Dunn.
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is on Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November at the Merlin Theatre. Tickets are available on the Merlin Theatre website or by calling 01373 465949.
