The winners of this year’s Frome Festival Treasure Hunt were recently awarded their prizes by newly appointed festival Co-Chair Andy Jones.

The winners are Carol Holt and Elaine Lavender, who won a Silver Long Heart Pendant designed by local goldsmith Annette Gabbedey and presented by Andy Jones on behalf of the festival board.

The Treasure Hunt has been a much-loved staple of Frome Festival since its inception in 2001. It raises funds to help support the festival and gives participants the opportunity to explore hidden parts of the town, whether they are longstanding residents or new to Frome.

Carol Holt said, “It was nice finding bits of Frome you didn’t know existed and we had to go a bit further than the centre. I appreciated that it followed this year’s fabric theme.”

Gavin Rea, who has created the Treasure Hunt for the past few years, said, “There were eight fully correct answers received with a large number of very near misses and the winning entry was drawn from a hat. A lot of people came a bit unstuck on clue 22 – right location, but the answer I wanted was glow-worms.”

Carol Holt said that she would not have got that question right had she not gone to Julian Hight’s ‘Frome Heritage Tree Walk’ covering Millennium Park earlier that week as part of Frome Festival. As a Treasure Hunt regular she also noticed something during last year’s search that helped.

Both winners agreed that they’d had “great fun doing it”, with plenty of tea stops along the way.

Annette Gabbedey Goldsmiths has sponsored the Treasure Hunt from the outset and sees this as a way of giving back to the community.

This year Annette is celebrating her 35th year in business and additionally sponsored the Bob Morris Lecture at the Merlin Theatre featuring professor Kate Williams. “I am very grateful for Frome,” said Annette. “Carol and Elaine are looking forward to sharing the prize necklace.”

Newly appointed Co-Chair Andy Jones, the former Mayor of Frome was recently welcomed into the leadership role alongside Lockhart Murdoch.

Answers to the Treasure Hunt can be found on the Frome Festival website. www.frome-festival-treasure-hunt/

  • Somerset Council to spend nearly £2.2m by 2029 looking after trees

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council will spend nearly £2.2m over the next four years looking after the county’s trees including ongoing efforts to combat ash dieback.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Highways Act 1980, the council has a legal duty to ensure that trees within its care (e.g. those on public roads and in parks) do not “pose an unacceptable risk to the public”.

The council has now awarded a new four-year contract to carry out necessary maintenance and reactive work at an estimated cost of £675,000 a year – the equivalent of £2,190,000 over the lifetime of the contract.

The contract will include additional work to combat ash dieback, which is now “widespread” across the county and requires significant intervention to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Paul Sweetman, the council’s service manager for highway risk, said, “We are responsible for the management of a large and diverse tree stock across our land holdings, including along highways, in parks, schools, and on other public properties. "

  • Community radio course for young people

Frome’s community radio station is launching its third 10-week ‘Introduction to Radio’ training programme for young people aged 14 to 18.

The new course with Frome FM is designed to teach essential radio show production techniques, including presenting, interviewing and technical broadcasting skills.

Following completion of two previous courses, two new youth shows are regularly broadcasting, with another currently in production.

One show born from the training programme is The Three Horsemen, hosted by Yanah, Toby and Dax, who meet up every month to record their music-and-chat show.

Toby said, “I really enjoyed the course the best bit is the friends we made on the way.”

  • Resident launches uplifting book on Ukrainian identity

A local resident from Ukraine has launched a new humorous Ukrainian anthology, Bless the Mess.

Svitlana Kulyk moved to Frome three years ago with a mission to promote contemporary Ukrainian authors and introduce British readers to modern Ukrainian literature.

She is the founder of the literary agency Lit_Agency_Phoenix and, in her latest publication, Bless the Mess, Svitlana brings together humorous short stories by multiple Ukrainian writers, offering a positive and uplifting perspective on Ukrainian cultural identity.

She said, “For many people in the UK, the first time they learned about Ukraine was through the tragedy of war. With this anthology, I wanted to reintroduce my country from another angle – one that is bright, warm and full of humour. It shows that Ukrainians are not defined only by struggle; we are also creators, storytellers and people with a rich sense of humour.”

  • Medical practice launches health and wellbeing programmes

Patients of Frome Medical Practice are invited to join three group programmes starting in January, each of which aims to improve health and wellbeing and help patients live well.

‘Habits for Health’ begins on Friday 9th January and is a six-week course focused on supporting patients to make small, positive changes that can lead to a healthier life.

‘Live Well With Pain’ starts on Thursday 15th January and is for patients living with persistent pain. Dr Jos Selwyn-Gotha from Frome Medical Practice said, “It has already helped many patients in the past.”

  • Frome artist celebrates international design award

A Frome designer has won third place in an international curtain design competition and travelled to Los Angeles for a glittering awards ceremony.

Kate Frost, a self-taught surface pattern designer, won joint third place in a global competition run by TwoPages, a Los Angeles-based curtain design company. She travelled to the city for the ceremony, where her designs as curtains and blinds were launched for sale.

She said, “I won joint third place from over 350 artists and 5,000 individually submitted designs. This moment has shown me that even large global brands are seeking deeper creative roots.

“They want to amplify real artists, real stories and work that honours connection, place and craft. I hope my experience might also encourage other artists and makers in our area, reminding us that heartfelt work still has power in the wider world.”

  • Somerset Council to spend up to £5m on new staff laptops

Somerset Council will spend up to £5m over the next two years on new laptops for its staff. The council currently has around 5,000 laptops for its staff, with many of the devices nearing the end of their recommended service life. Officers reviewed the hardware in late-2023 (shortly after the new council came into being) and decided not to immediately replace the devices en masse, allowing the existing staff to have a smoother transition into their new roles.
