Following their 24 hour fundraising marathon, Frome FM director, Jeremy Westcott, presented a cheque to the Frome College Radio Club for £2,417. The college have donated part of this money to the college’s SEMH team to support children with social, emotional and mental health issues as well as funding new equipment for the radio club.
With the help of staff members, the team broadcasted live for 24 hours continuously from 5th – 6th May on Frome FM. Shows included topics such as maths, English and music, including interviews with celebrities Paul Ross and Tony Christie.
The funds raised will buy equipment to help more students be part of the radio project, and to bring their views to the community and beyond with some funding also going towards the SEMH team at the college, to help those in need with various social, emotional and mental health issues.
The project will expand into the middle schools of Frome, helping the year 8 students with the transition to Frome College, as well starting to equip them with the skills they will need in the future.
The college radio club have the unique and exciting opportunity to broadcast both live, and pre-recorded, regular shows on Frome FM. Students meet in their own time to research, plan, edit, and broadcast their own shows.
The students make features about life in the college, as well as wider local, national, and global issues that matter to them. It enables young people of all abilities to work with, and get to know, people within the wider community of Frome.
It allows them to have a say in services that affect them and to develop the confidence and expertise to articulate what matters to them. This opportunity provides vital skills and experience which lasts for a lifetime.
