CARNIVAL fever hits Frome this weekend, as thousands of people are expected to fill the town for what is one of the highlights in Frome’s calendar.
After months of fundraising, float-building and royalty-crowning, Frome’s hotly anticipated Carnival takes place this Saturday 24th September.
The children’s procession starts at 2.30pm from Victoria Park with the main evening procession at 7.00pm starting from Marston Trading Estate.
The Frome Carnival tradition is over 100 years old and sees thousands of people turn out throughout the day for carnival fun and frivolities.
Carnival committee chair June Barnes said, “The committee is very busy finalising the details to ensure the carnival runs smoothly.
“The purpose of the event is not only for everyone to enjoy themselves, but to raise money to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves, so I hope you will give generously to enable us to continue to help others.
“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has already been involved with the carnival and volunteered to help on the day. But there’s time to get involved – either by entering the processions themselves or by volunteering to help on the day as programme sellers and donation collectors.
“The carnival’s success is very much dependent on people getting involved on the day, so we hope everyone is getting their costumes ready!”
As well as the carnival processions, there’s free street entertainment outside Frome library from 11am-2pm, with live music, street acts, carnival mask painting and face painting.
Road closures will be in place to allow the procession to move safely through the town. Frome Carnival committee ask that residents take particular care over where they park on carnival day; last year’s children’s procession could not complete its route as planned because parked vehicles were blocking the road.
Roads will be closed for the afternoon procession from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, including Weymouth Road, Somerset Road, Butts Hill and Christchurch Street West.
Roads will then close from 6.30pm to 10.30pm for the evening procession, which will start at the Marston Trading Estate and take in The Butts, Butts Hill, Wesley Slope, Bath Street, Market Place, North Parade, Berkley Road, Badgers Hill and finish near the football ground.
