FROME Independent, who run the monthly markets, was crowned a winner at the first ever Mendip Business Awards last month.
The company came away with ‘Tourism Business of the Year’, fending off competition from The Cross at Croscombe and Glastonbury Abbey at the awards held at this year’s Bath and West Show.
Director of The Frome Independent, Tabitha Clayson said, “We are delighted to have won Tourism Business of the Year at the Mendip Business Awards.
“It’s very rewarding to know that our efforts to support local independent businesses and promote tourism to Frome have been recognised by the business community in Mendip.
“It’s a win not just for our team and designers but for all our traders and partners who come together on the day to create such a great atmosphere. We felt very flattered to be in such good company with the other winners and finalists and to be part of an evening that celebrated the wealth of business talent and creativity in our corner of Somerset.”
The first ever year of the Mendip Business Awards attracted many applications from the huge range of businesses across Mendip.
The Tourism Business of the Year award celebrated the best of Mendip’s tourist destinations, food and drink and accommodation providers and was sponsored by The Swan Hotel in Wells.
The judges felt that The Frome Independent demonstrated innovative marketing, excellent customer service and strong leadership.
The award ceremony was aimed at celebrating and showcasing the achievements of local businesses, as well as uncovering some of the hidden success stories from local entrepreneurs, start-ups, high growth companies and social enterprises.
Supported by the local Chambers of Commerce and media partners, and sponsored by Capita, Mendip District Council and the Royal Bath & West Society, the event was hosted by BBC Somerset’s Emma Britton. Michael Eavis was presented with a special Lifetime Achievement Award for an outstanding contribution to farming, culture and tourism in the Mendips.
