The Frome branch of the Macular Society recently celebrated a decade of supporting people with sight loss, including those with macular degeneration.
The charity provides support through regular meetings and social events, helping those who are partially sighted to connect with others and share experiences.
To mark the milestone, the group held a special charity lunch at Frome Cricket Club—where they meet on the third Wednesday of each month. The event featured fish and chips, cakes, a quiz and a raffle.
“Over the years, we hav
e always had a good, friendly crowd where people meet one another, share ideas, and pick up tips for living with macular degeneration or other vision/sight loss,” said Pat Mason, a founding member of the group.
As a branch of the national Macular Society, the group encourages members to socialise and take part in activities they might not do alone.
“We enjoy regular outings,” explained group leader Nicky Gardener. “Some highlights over the years include a steam train ride at Cranmore with cream tea, boat trips on the barge at Bradford-on-Avon, and visits to garden centres.”
A key part of the meetings is sharing information and signposting people to further support. “I have lots of leaflets I can give people if they have any queries,” said Nicky. “We also invite guest speakers, including police community support officers to talk about personal and home safety, the fire brigade and the air ambulance charity. Our regional manager visits once a year and will be joining us again in June.”
Recently, the group has introduced music-based activities, including exercise sessions. “It’s really lovely,” said Pat. “Sometimes, when we have groups perform, people even get up and have a bit of a dance. It’s just about doing something they wouldn’t do on their own.”
“Some people are nervous about joining, but they can come and sit quietly if they prefer—it’s a really friendly place.”
The group is supported by local charities, including the Lions Club and Rotary, which help with fundraising.
“People can come to us as soon as they are diagnosed with macular degeneration or other sight loss,” said Nicky. “We ask members for a suggested donation of £3 at meetings, which covers the cost of trips, refreshments, rent for the meeting room and the minibus.”
