FROME local, Daniel Masters, has been selected to compete for Canada in the 24-hour Running World Championships on Friday 25th October in Albi, France.
The IAU (International Association of Ultra Runners) hold a 24 hour World Championship race every two years. This is where the best ultra runners in the world come to see how far they can run in one day around a track.
Daniel said, “I used to be a professional rugby player and moved to Canada in 2000 to play for the Calgary Mavericks. I ended up emigrating to Canada and becoming a citizen, which gives me the chance to represent Canada in this event. I moved back to the area in 2012 for family reasons.
“I am very excited to be representing Canada, but I am nervous knowing that running for 24 hours is very painful!
“Training has gone well for the past few months. I reached my peak of 170 miles in a week, and now I am tapering in preparation for the race. I hope to stay injury free!”
Daniel used to play rugby for Frome RFC. However, since breaking his hand several years ago, he has since focussed on his running. However, he has returned to the pitch a couple of times in the last year for the vets team.
