FROME mayor, cllr Philip Campagna, recently presented the founding member of the Frome LGBTQIA social group, Mark Stroud, with a certificate of commendation for his work establishing and running the group.
The group, which provides vital support and a safe space for members of the community to connect and not be alone, was established four years ago by Mark, with assistance from Kenni Poulsen.
The presentation of the certificate took place at the last event organised by Mark and Kenni who are stepping down from running the group; the monthly social event will now be the responsibility of Richard Shuttleworth, David Wallace and Jeanette Bushell.
“We – Kenni and I – are so proud of the group,” said Mark, “going from our first meeting all those years ago where we had about nine gay men to now where we have such a diverse group. But we feel it’s time to pass the baton on. The monthly social is in good hands with Richard, David and Jeanette taking the reins. They have been part of the group since day one and have often hosted when I have not been able.
“Last year the group held their second Pride event and they say that the local community can expect more this year. Apart from the monthly social the group also hold regular walks and now also host Rainbow Heart’s, a regular meeting of Frome LGBTQIA parents.”
Speaking about founding the group, Mark added, “I had been working in sexual and mental health for years and was aware of the social isolation that is often faced within the LGBT community and Kenni had recently moved to Frome and knew how difficult things could be.”
The Frome LGBTQIA social group meets on fourth Friday of each month in the Gold Bar, upstairs at Flow Bar. You can find more information on their Facebook page LGBTQ Community Frome or on Instagram @frome_lgbrqia
