FROME-based charity Positive Action on Cancer has been commissioned to provide a counselling service for cancer patients and their families at Weston General Hospital.
Funding from the Weston Area Health NHS Trust will enable PAC to provide four counselling sessions each week over the next three and a half years.
Sue Littler, Lead Cancer Nurse for Weston Area Health NHS Trust said, “We are delighted that PAC will be offering counselling to our cancer patients, their families and carers. It will be an important addition to their cancer care and also support for those affected by the disease.”
PAC will also provide monthly supervision sessions to Weston’s Cancer Nurse Specialists in line with national requirements.
Mary Taylor, director of PAC said, “It is wonderful to be able to offer our service in Weston-super-Mare and to know that so many more people who are affected by cancer will be supported emotionally through their illness. Our aim is to reach more people affected by cancer and offer our service in many more venues, so we hope that Weston is the first of many. It is especially rewarding to know that this part of the service is being fully funded by Weston Health Area Health NHS Trust.”
PAC is currently the only organisation to offer professional counselling to any adults or children affected or bereaved by cancer and other life threatening illnesses in BANES, Somerset and West Wilts.
