The Frome Park “A” team entertained top of the table Norwest “A” in a very interesting encounter.

A very close game where both teams had led but in the latter stages the Frome bowlers picking up some high scoring ends which secured the victory. The match finished with the home side winning on two rinks 72-55 to pick up 10 points and this meant the visitors would miss out on top spot and promotion as Bath “B” won at home picking up all 12 points.

Frome’s best rink was John Curtis, Richard Phillips, Les Stather & Steve West who slowly got the upper hand, leading by only 1 shot after 7 ends, this lead had increased to 7 shots by 14 ends and a strong finish gave them the win at 21 ends by a score of 32-16.

The Frome Park “B” team have had a disappointing finish to the season as they lost their final match away against Keynsham “A” and will be relegated to East 2 next season.

The two Frome clubs of the Park and Selwood combine forces for the annual end of season Floodlit Charity Cup competition; this format is 5 teams of triples and the scoring is based on each winning triple.  They have started strongly with 2 victories, first against Paulton, winning 4 -1 where the best triple was Cliff White, Eddie Maidment & Mike Gulliford.  This was followed by another 4-1 win, this time against Prattens; the best winning triple was Pete Wheeler, Les Stather & Steve West.

The Park Ladies continue to have some mixed fortunes in their Wild League campaign.  A poor showing against Shepton Mallet saw them lose on all rinks and overall by 65-38.  They bounced back with an improved performance to beat Prattens 56-35.  Their best winning triple was Jane Mcleod, Olivia Grant & Val Church who dominated most of their game to win convincingly by 26-9.

Then another setback with a defeat against City of Wells, losing  by 63-37; they did however have a winning triple to get 2 points.  Liz Wells, Olive Maidment & Val Church played very well to come away with a 21-8 victory.

The mixed team played a friendly match against Sherborne; this turned out to be a really closely fought encounter and it was Frome Park who just got the win by 4 shots overall, winning by 93-89.  The rink of Jane Mcleod, Gayle Brown, Clive Smith & Keith Mcleod probably sealed the win for the Park with a well-earned 24-11 victory.

The mixed team then had another good win when they entertained visitors from Shaftesbury in a triples match.  Both teams put in some good bowling on a fast green but the home side just got the upper hand late on to get the win by 71-58. Frome’s best winning triple was Malcolm Jepson, Betty Warren & Val Church claiming the victory by 22-9.

  • Frome Festival Treasure Hunt winners

The winners of this year’s Frome Festival Treasure Hunt were recently awarded their prizes by newly appointed festival Co-Chair Andy Jones.

The winners are Carol Holt and Elaine Lavender, who won a Silver Long Heart Pendant designed by local goldsmith Annette Gabbedey and presented by Andy Jones on behalf of the festival board.

The Treasure Hunt has been a much-loved staple of Frome Festival since its inception in 2001. It raises funds to help support the festival and gives participants the opportunity to explore hidden parts of the town, whether they are longstanding residents or new to Frome.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Be a nature detective!

Hi, this is Jo from the Wild Bunch.

Have you heard about Frome’s Community Wildlife Mapping Project? If not, now is the perfect time to get familiar with how to get involved. And if you’ve been taking part for a while but had a busy summer, now is a good time to get back into it before wildlife starts hibernating or migrating.

The project was set up in December 2021 by Frome Town Council and Somerset Environmental Record Centre, and since then, over 7,000 observations have been recorded by 136 observers. Over 1,300 species have been identified showing how diverse biodiversity is in our town. A project like this is not only fantastic for community engagement but also provides valuable baseline biodiversity data. It takes time to collect data and start seeing trends, but over the past year, while Frome Town Council has been updating its green spaces management plans, we’ve finally had enough data to help inform these plans and provide suitable recommendations to support wildlife in our green spaces.

Over 80 talented artists and makers will display a wide-ranging array of work from sculpture, textile art and ceramics to printmaking, photography and carpentry.

“There’s something for everybody!” says committee member Chloe Pinheiro. “If you’ve never experienced an open studios trail before, it’s a wonderful way to discover the local creative community, chat to makers in their studios, quietly browse a group exhibition or learn a new art form in one of the many workshops on offer! • Frome hosts South West’s largest camera and photographic fair

Frome will once again play host to the South West’s largest celebration of all things photographic when the Frome Wessex Camera & Photographic Fair returns to the Cheese and Grain on Sunday 19th October.

More than 30 specialist stalls will fill the venue, offering everything from modern digital gear to collectable vintage cameras, alongside lenses, filters, flashguns, film, books and old prints. For anyone with a passion for photography – whether seasoned professionals, collectors, or those just picking up a camera for the first time – the fair promises a real treasure trove.

“If you’ve never been to a photographic camera fair, you’re missing a treat,” said David Chedgy from the Frome Wessex Photographic Club. “The prices are low, and you’ll find cameras, lenses and lots of other photographic accessories.

“Camera fairs are very friendly places and the stallholders will be pleased to give help and technical assistance on cameras and photographic equipment.”

Rob said, “In these times of deep division and deeper despair, there is often a feeling that the future is going to be awful. However, there is plenty of evidence that things can change, and cultures can change rapidly, dramatically, and unexpectedly – for the better.”

  • Community garden wins Frome in Bloom award

The new community garden on Milk Street has won the President’s Trophy in the 2025 Frome in Bloom awards for outstanding community effort.

The garden was renovated earlier this year by members of Trinity Community Group, Milk Street residents, pupils at Vallis School and residents of the Trinity area, working with Frome Town Council’s ranger team, Tree Officer Helen Viner and the Frome Town Council Communities team.

Flower beds, seating and wooden play structures have created a space for local residents to gather, for children to play in before and after school and improved the appearance of the whole area.

Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner said, “Milk Street Green was such a lovely project to work on – the community came together and achieved something that will keep bringing joy and bringing people together for years to come. We’re really proud of it, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped with the vision, the planting and now the ongoing maintenance of this brilliant space. Thank you, Frome in Bloom for recognising all of that hard work!”

  • Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra – with a modern twist

Shakespear’s tragedy Antony and Cleopatra is coming to the Merlin Theatre next month, brought to you – with a modern twist – by Shakespeare Live.

The story of the passionate love affair between two powerful rulers – Cleopatra , queen of Egypt, and Mark Antony, of Rome – is full of comedy and witty banter, yet it is also a history play wrapped round a tragic romance, examining the choices between the personal and the political.

This fast-paced version, adapted and directed by Jacky Crosher for Shakespeare Live, spins a new twist on this less-performed play. An ensemble cast unpick the plot and text using both modern and original language.

“A glorious, magical re-working of this wonderful play,” say the organisers.

The play is at Frome’s Merlin Theatre on Saturday 25th October at 8pm. For more details and tickets, visit merlintheatre.co.uk
