Acclaimed Frome producer Kayleigh-Paige Rees has won ‘Best Documentary’ at the National Film Awards for her film, which tells the story of Ukrainian families affected by the war.
Kayleigh-Paige was presented with the award for her documentary We Are Home, which offers a raw and human look at the people living in the Ukrainian city of Skole.
Narrated by Stephen Fry, the documentary was recently released on Amazon Prime and captures both the devastation and resilience of those affected and living in Skole.
Kayleigh-Paige received the award from British actress Amanda Clapham at a special ceremony at Porchester Hall in London.
She said, “The award is a powerful reminder of why we told this story – to give voice to Ukrainian families and children displaced by war. I’m incredibly proud and honoured that their strength has been recognised in this way.”
She began working on We Are Home and visited Ukraine in early 2023, returning later that year with a Ukrainian crew to film on the ground.
She said, “At the heart of We Are Home is a powerful narrative that centres not on politics, but on people – the mothers trying to rebuild stability, the children searching for a sense of normality, and the communities opening their doors in solidarity.
“Winning Best Documentary is an incredible honour, but more than that, it is a tribute to the strength and spirit of the families who shared their stories with us. This film belongs to all the children and families living in Skole who have been displaced from their homes.”
In her acceptance speech, Kayleigh-Paige went on to thank the people of Skole for their “trust, generosity and unwavering hope.” She said, “This film wouldn’t exist without your openness and your strength. They welcomed us, they talked to us, and they made this film possible.”
In 2022, Kayleigh-Paige was named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and won Best Producer in 2023 for her documentary Keep Calm & Carry On, which followed families through the Covid lockdowns.
Kayleigh-Paige and her team are now moving into pre-production for their next narrative feature film, Everything.
