Two Frome Rotarians, Dot Cretney and Marilyn Dorrington, left the UK recently bound for Bhiwadi City southwest of New Delhi, India, as members of a 21 UK Rotarian team to immunize children as part of the Rotary International drive to eradicate polio completely.
Last Sunday, 29th January, the team planned to immunise 28,000 children under the age of five in Bhiwadi. The 21 UK Rotarians are supporting health workers all who wear yellow to attract crowds in, and help administer the vaccinations. The team worked from 8am to 4pm across the city and then travelled from house to house picking up the children that didn’t come out to the booths.
In total across India, the project will administer 170 million doses of vaccine. In addition to the vaccination programme, the Rotarian team visited five Rotary projects in schools and education centres, a Rotary sponsored crematorium and a hospital. They also had the opportunity to meet and dine with local Rotarian members.
