This weekend sees the third Annual Frome Active Sport Fest. Starting on Saturday the 29th April, Frome Active and a number of community based sports groups throughout the town are coming together to offer free sessions at their clubs and at various locations to show the town what they are about.
This year is a first year that the golf club have joined in and are embracing the concept thoroughly by not only coming to the Sports Fest Day on the 30th in Victoria Park on Thursday but also opening their club session to junior members for free on the following Sunday. Liberty Gymnastics and Elevation Fitness are also showcasing on Sports fest day and at their own facilities through the week.
Also for the first time, because it is slightly later in the year than usual, the Canoe Club have also been able to open their doors and kayaks last year appearing with a kayak machine. Organiser Sue Willis said, “We are particularly grateful for the co operation of the canoe club and delighted that they can get everyone on the water this year on the 29th – not only are they opening their doors to everybody for free sessions but they are doing it the day before their important slalom event.” This will take place on the 30th and all are invited to watch this event.
Mayhem in the meadow is back on May Day too with active things to do outside including silly games and other activities such as seed planting. A cardboard city from Frome Scrapstore this year is a welcome addition to the lovely willow structures that were made last year.
Chris Stringer from Frome Town Council who is overseeing the first Showfield Fun Run said, “Start your day with us on the 6th for a fun and inclusive mile at the Old Showfield. No pressure, no times, just a fun and active way to start your weekend. The Showfield’s ground has some uphills and downhills and mixed terrain so sensible shoes will be needed; trainers or walking boots. Dogs are welcome on leads and bring your own stopwatch if you want to time yourself! Fancy dress optional.”
Mattie Hemmings, an old favourite, will also be back on the Sports Fest Day, this time at Victoria Park on the ramps with BMX demonstrations and workshops so don’t forget to bring your bike!
Two further initiatives are being launched during Sports Fest Week. FTC’s free tennis sessions in conjunction with the Tennis Club and Fight like a Girl – a upcoming course lead by Chris Roach from Elevation which showcases a series of sports such as fencing, archery, judo, boxing, shooting where a show of strength and finesse is vital. These will be funded by Sportivate.
Councillor Gary Collin-son said, “We are delighted that Frome Active not only have managed such a varied programme this year but that we have the opportunity to launch these on-going initiatives. There is so much grass roots support for sport in this town that it is good to be able to support and celebrate that. I’d urge everyone to take part in as many activities as possible.”
A number of Sports Fest stalwarts such as the Football Club & Creative Aquatics have yet confirm what they are doing but all have committed to doing something so please watch the Facebook page for further details: Facebook.com/ FromeChildrensFestival. Information will also be available at Frome Town Council website www. frome towncouncil.org.uk.
