Three talented students from Frome College have secured a place in the national finals of the ‘Made in Somerset’ enterprise competition, showcasing their innovative sustainable design concept.
Year 10 students Bella Sherab-Chapman, Tallis Mason and Valerie Nyakudja, collectively known as Team Thrifted, will present their groundbreaking idea for a sustainable community space at Clarks Village at Landsec headquarters in London on 18th June.
The team will present their design, which includes innovative elements to enhance the customer experience and increase dwell time within the retail environment, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of commercial space design.
The team’s journey began in March when they competed against students from King Arthur’s School, Wincanton, in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitch.
After winning the local round, Team Thrifted advanced to the national semi-finals, where they competed virtually against eight other regional champions from across the UK.
Judges were particularly impressed with their upcycling concept, which they described as “a massive plus point” that “provided a real consideration of fabric and what to do with clothing that doesn’t get sold.” The panel also praised their “fantastic guiding PowerPoint presentation” and noted that their idea “matched the current climate and considered the footfall of the wider centre.”
Team Thrifted will now compete against two other finalists at Landsec HQ in London, with the opportunity to see their sustainable community space concept potentially implemented at Clarks Village.
