Frome – The Place to Pee!

For a nation whose humour firmly rests in the smallest room in the house, we have more than a little trouble talking about that special place everyone keeps their porcelain throne.

The WC, powder room, bog, can, loo or khazi is arguably the most important room in any house and has been since the 1919s when these wonderful inventions started coming inside. But away from the warmth of your own private chamber what happens if you find yourself out in town having supped one too many a cappuccino.

If you had found yourself in need of a ‘little boys’ room pre 2013 (you’d have had no choice but to hot foot it down to The Cattle Market car park where Frome’s only public toilets remain. But now, thanks to the current town council there are toilets available for use all over Frome, and it’s your right to use them, no grappling around trying to find a penny, Frome Town Council has paid for you!

The idea behind the community toilet is a simple one, if you find yourself needing the loo in Frome town centre, there are several businesses that are happy to open their doors and allow you to spend a penny with them. Frome Town Council are always looking for new businesses to join the scheme, but to date, the following have signed up:

Cheese and Grain • The George • Costa • Crocker and Woods • La Strada • Paccamora • Old Bath Arms • Plus  The Town Council Offices.

Frome Mayor, Peter Macfadyen a champion of the community toilet scheme, is delighted at the ongoing success of the project. He said, “Mendip closed the six public toilets –still dotted around town – some years ago and left only the central car park one with limited opening hours – this was a significant issue both for visitors and residents.

“Whilst these toilets were in operation Frome Town Council paid rent to Mendip for their use, so there was spare money available, but no service or facilities for the people, the council were committed to wiping out the problem.”

The current town council decided to implement a Community Toilet Scheme in 2012, and since then have been flushing out suitable businesses to open and advertise their toilets as available for the public.

The mayor added, “The pilot scheme has been really successful, saving money and providing more public toilet access than any other town in Southern Europe; we are delighted in the take up by local businesses.”

Over the next few weeks the community toilet scheme will be promoted heavily:  on the town websites, on new visitor maps, better signage at all the businesses involved and at a public event soon to be revealed.

Taking the community toilet scheme one step further, Peter Macfadyen has arranged for most of the community toilets to twin with toilets in Africa through charities Cord and Tearfund. These charities raise money to pay for toilets to be built in places where they simply don’t exist.

  • International Women’s Day in Frome

Frome is marking International Women’s Day (IWD) with events designed to entertain and bring people together, while opening up important conversations and raising awareness.

Kicking off the programme of events is the annual ‘Lightning Talks’. Submissions are now open for ideas for a five-minute ‘lightning talk’ via the link at the foot of this article. On Saturday 7th March, Frome Town Council is welcoming Lu Featherstone, motivational speaker, influencer and performer to the Frome Saturday market. Along with her 32-foot vintage American bus ‘Susie’, Lu will spread the message of the vital positive role of male allyship, sharing information about Frome’s White Ribbon campaign and providing a space to chat, reflect and engage.

Frome town councillors will also be available at the market on 7th March for their regular ‘meet the councillor’ session from 10am to 12pm.

  • Acclaimed author explores aristocratic family’s slavery-linked fortunes at Frome talk

An award-winning investigative journalist and acclaimed author is coming to Frome this month to explore the powerful legacy of one of Britain’s most controversial aristocratic families.

Paul Lashmar will be speaking about his latest book, Drax of Drax Hall: How One British Family Got Rich (and Stayed Rich) Through Slavery and Sugar, at an event hosted by Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books on Thursday 26th February at The Archangel in King Street.

In the book, described as “Perfect for fans of David Olusoga”, Paul Lashmar takes a hard look at the Drax family – one of the wealthiest and most influential aristocratic families in the UK – tracing their fortune back to its roots in slavery and the sugar trade and asking important and searching questions about restorative justice, reparations and what we do about fortunes built on blood.

  • Learn about fostering at friendly drop-in session in Frome

Residents in Frome who are curious about fostering are being invited to a relaxed information session on Thursday 26th February.

The drop-in event, hosted by Fostering in Somerset, offers a chance to speak informally with local foster carers over a free coffee and slice of cake.

The session aims to give people a realistic insight into what fostering involves, with no pressure to take your interest further. Staff and carers will be on hand to answer questions, share experiences and explain the support available, including full training and weekly payments.

“The event is designed to be welcoming and accessible, making it an ideal first step for anyone wanting to explore fostering in a supportive, informal setting,” said Lead Cllr Heather Shearer, Member for Children, Families and Education at Somerset Council.

  • New homes to be built on North Parade car park

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Nearly 20 new low-cost homes will be built on North Parade car park after three years of delays.

The North Parade car park, located off North Hill Mews in Frome, was identified by Mendip District Council as a site for potential social housing in November 2020.

The council – and its unitary successor, Somerset Council – have subsequently been working with the Stonewater housing association on proposals to build on the site, securing a land swap with the neighbouring Farleigh Further Education College in mid-2021.

Stonewater formally applied in May 2023 for permission to build 18 new low-cost, low-carbon homes on the car park, comprising nine flats and nine houses.

Somerset Council has now granted permission for the scheme nearly three years on, meaning construction could get under way by the late summer.

The site lies to the north of the railway line running through Frome, within walking distances of both Rodden Meadow and the Saxonvale regeneration site.

  • Firefighters celebrate 50 years of twinning

Firefighters in Frome have celebrated 50 years of twinning with a French fire crew, marking five decades of partnership.

Frome Fire Station is twinned with the fire station in Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne. The twinning originated when a delegation from Frome Fire Station, alongside police and ambulance representatives, visited France to strengthen ties following the UK’s entry into the European Union.

The French crew visited Frome in December to mark the partnership, which began in 1975, with Frome’s firefighters expected to travel to France in September.

Watch manager Jason Collier said, “That first visit sparked a tradition of cultural exchange and professional collaboration that continues to this day.”

Over five decades, annual exchanges have become a cornerstone of the relationship, with Frome firefighters joining their French counterparts each December for the Festival of St Barbe, the patron saint of firefighters.

  • Eight weeks left to save cancer counselling charity

A cancer counselling charity in Frome has just eight weeks left to raise the remaining £37,000 of a £55,000 emergency appeal or it faces closure.

We Hear You (WHY) has reached 30% of its fundraising target since launching the appeal in January. The charity says the remaining funds must be secured by 31st March to protect free counselling for hundreds of local families.

WHY provides specialist counselling and emotional support to people affected by cancer and life-threatening illness. Rising costs and the loss of multi-year funding have left the charity facing an urgent shortfall and it is urging more people to get involved.

Since launching the appeal, supporters across the community have stepped forward with creativity and determination.

Among them are Rose and her son Keinan, a mum-and-son duo training for the London Marathon as part of #TeamWHY. Alongside their marathon challenge, they have organised a jumble sale and a sold-out quiz night, raising funds and awareness for WHY’s work.
