THE Frome Society has just added another book on the history of the town to its collection; this time in collaboration with prolific West Country publisher Hobnob Press.
“Aimed at the general reader, it is an enjoyable scamper through the history of the town and the local area written by local historian and author Mick Davis,” says a spokesperson for the society.
“Frome Through Time is arranged chronologically and extends far back in time to the Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, moves through the Roman Era, the establishment of the town during Saxon times and on down the centuries to the present day covering the entire period of its growth into an important Somerset market town.
“There are many little gems along the way from freaky finds and quirky characters to some serious history, crime and punishment, long lost pubs, some Roman villas, a tank, ancient maps, a Saxon throwing axe, witchcraft, riots and rebellions, some conjoined ladies, a lost head, murders, coin hoards, ancient customs and even a few skeletons and some flying saucers all profusely illustrated with many graphics appearing here for the first time.
“The book is divided up into easily digestible sections to be dipped into at random and for those who want to go further there is much more information obtainable from the Frome Society and the Frome Museum. The whole collection is brought up-to-date with the magnificent Foo Fighters on stage at the Cheese and Grain in 2017.
“The book is issued by Hobnob Press as a 206-page paperback, with over 160 illustrations many in full colour and reproduced here for the first time. Anyone who finds this in their Christmas stocking will not be disappointed.”
Frome Through Time (ISBN 978-1-914407-62-8) retails at £17.95 and is available from, Frome Museum, 1 North Parade, BA11 1AT; telephone: 01373 454 611 or Winstone’s Bookshop, 10 Cheap Street, Frome BA11; telephone: 01373 473 111
