Frome's new Town Hall

Frome's new Town Hall
Frome’s new Town Hall

IT’S official – Frome’s Town Hall will soon be back in business!

Frome Town Council will be moving to the Victorian building on Christchurch Street East this month and having a grand public opening on 1st April.

The building was used by Somerset County Council for years, but the town will now take over as it leaves the offices at 5 Palmer Street.

Leader of Frome Town Council, Mel Usher says,  “My role was to see the possibilities when the county moved out and to assist the negotiations during purchase. We have been very lucky to be able to call on the invaluable skills of Councillor Colin Cobb, a qualified architect, who has provided advice and overseen the project which has come in on budget.

“It’s great to see a piece of Frome’s history restored to its former glory. The building represents a new-found confidence in the town to influence its own destiny.”

The Town Hall itself is of an Italian Renaissance design and dates from the end of the 19th Century, with the first meeting of Frome Urban District Council taking place on January 7th 1895. Prior to that, the Frome Poor Law Board built and was based in what was called the “Public Offices”. The many original features include extensive mosaic floors, ornate fireplaces and an ahead of its time passive air refreshment system.

In order to keep the building in good hands,  two new positions have been set up within the Council, that of Town Hall Manager, namely Meg Mosley, and Town Hall Steward Sean Powell.

The Town Hall will not only provide a home to three local organisations, there will also be two meeting rooms to be hired out by local organisations, for small parties and others uses, two desk space rooms with facilities for individuals to have a secure, comfortable place to work. The Council Chamber will be the best room in Frome. It will be a great place for weddings, larger parties and business meetings, talks and seminars to regularly take place in this room, alongside the Council meetings.

Meg Mosley, also acting Marketing and Communications Manager for the Council, says, “This has been an incredible joint effort involving all parts of the community, from local councillors and private contractors, to local residents who have shared their memories and experiences of this wonderful building.  We look forward to inviting you all to our launch night on April 1st, a celebratory evening for all to enjoy.”

The building will be open to the public from February 20th for regular Council business. For more information please visit the Town Council’s website at www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk or call them on 01373 465757.

The Town Council has put together an FAQ page for more information about their move – which you can find by visiting www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk/move-frome-town-hall-2017/

Hunting Raven Books will welcome the writer on Monday 15th June at The Archangel, where she will discuss her latest work, No Fair Maidens, described as, “A wild journey with the lost goddesses of Britain”.

Kim will be joined in conversation by Frome-based fellow Penguin author Alice Albinia, with the event also including a question-and-answer session and book signing.

  • Frome Running Club Juniors on track

Frome Running Club Juniors came away with two champions at the Somerset County Track and Field championships in Yeovil last month.

Isy led the way in the U16 girls 1500m with an outstanding time of 5:04. Not to be outdone, Clara came in first in the U12 Girls 1200m run with a time 4:45.

Five other Juniors finished either second or third and two runners just missed with a fourth place. 12 Junior runners have taken part in track meets this spring and they have all achieved personal bests (PB) and are looking to take part in more meets over the summer to improve their times.

  • Frome man shortlisted for national football art prize

A painting by a Frome artist has been shortlisted for a national football art award and will feature in a touring exhibition.

Danny Markey’s image, which captures a football pitch in Mells, has been selected for the Football Art Prize and will go on display at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield from 15th June before touring to the National Football Museum in Manchester from November to February 2027.

“I just love that image of the goalposts and the symmetry of it,” said Danny. “There is something very ordinary about the fields, it could have been painted anywhere.”

  • Frome bus routes denied share of £13.1m for Saturday services

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Two bus routes in Frome have been denied a share of £13.1m of central government funding to bring back regular Saturday services.

The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed in December 2025 that Somerset would receive just over £24.7m of funding to support local bus services up to 2030.

Of this, just over £13.1m comprises revenue spending, which can be used to reduce running costs for passengers (e.g. capping the fares on Taunton’s park and ride service), while nearly £11.6m has been provided for capital projects, such as the delivery of Taunton’s new transport hub and its rural counterpart in Langport.

Councillor Dawn Denton, the Conservative division member for Frome North, has called on the council to allocate some of the £13.1m towards restoring Saturday services to the 162 and 184 routes, which run between Frome and the neighbouring villages.

  • Frome man completes gruelling charity challenge

A Frome man has completed one of the ‘hardest challenges’ of his life, raising nearly £5,000 for three charities.

Ben Hansell swam 15.5 kilometres, cycled 607 kilometres and ran 120 kilometres in five days, raising £4,742.40 for cancer counselling charity We Hear You, local mental health charity Big Moose and children’s cancer charity Morgan’s Army.

Initially, Ben had set his sights on completing five Ironman events in five days. However, after falling ill on the first day, he was forced to reduce the distances.

“When I started on the first day it was all going fine, then I got to the run and I got really sick,” he said. “I was taking lots of nutrition, like energy gels and stuff, but for the first time ever it just didn’t agree with me and I had terrible stomach cramps.”

  • Celebration of Frome resident’s life raises funds for Fair Frome

A festival-style party celebrating the life of an influential Frome resident has raised more than £1,200 for Fair Frome.

Party at the End of the World was held at the Cheese and Grain last month in memory of Phil Moakes, a well-known local figure who died last year.

Phil served as a town and county councillor and helped establish Frome FM radio station.

The event was coordinated by Phil’s partner, Maggie Gregory, and his family, with a long list of performers, all of whom had connections with him through his work in music.

  • New nursery planned at Frome’s Key Centre

A new nursery could open at the Key Centre in Frome as the town council looks for a childcare provider to run the facility.

Frome Town Council is inviting experienced childcare operators to apply to deliver year-round care for children from birth to four years old to meet growing local demand for nursery places in Frome. There is also the possibility of offering wraparound and holiday care for older children.

The nursery would be based in a purpose-built space at the Key Centre, with indoor and outdoor areas, a fitted kitchen, office and toilets. Providers would also be able to access the Key Centre community garden and cabin by arrangement.

Cllr Lisa Merryweather said, “Good Early Years provision provides a crucial foundation for children for their future education and a nurturing safe space for them to learn and grow."

  • Volunteers spot 11 bat species in Frome

More than 60 volunteers recently spotted 138 bats across 11 species at the Big Bat Count in Frome.

Divided into 11 teams, volunteers received basic training and an introduction to the recording equipment from Somerset Bat Group at the town hall before heading out to a variety of locations across the town.

As in previous years and as expected, common and soprano pipistrelle bats were the most frequently observed species in Frome. These were followed by sightings of serotine and noctule bats.

Volunteers also identified greater horseshoe bats during the count, a species of significant conservation interest, although only one observation has so far been formally confirmed.
