Frome Town 1-2 Weymouth – Calor League Southern Premier Division, Saturday 28th December 2013

Two late goals from Weymouth’s Stewart Yetton left Frome still looking for their first home league win of the season, but after they had controlled the game and taken the lead on the hour, the signs are that the elusive win is not too far away now.

Manager Adrian Foster’s second game in charge of Frome probably arrived without the chance of a training session as the matches come thick and fast around the Christmas / New Year period, and the pre-match plans had to be altered as Tim Stephenson got caught up in the aftermath of a traffic incident, meaning that Rhys Baggridge dropped back to play centre half alongside Josh Ford.

Frome were a little slow to get going at the start and a close range header past the post and two corners from Weymouth threatened early on, but as the match settled, Frome started to get the better of both possession and territory.

A crisp right wing cross from Ricky Hulbert found the head of Matt Groves in the 18th minute, but the striker was always falling backwards and Jason Matthews had an easy save to make. Groves was again denied by Matthews as he shot from 6 yards out, with the goalkeeper saving with his body.

Ben Wood’s long throws, corners and free kicks were providing most of Frome’s scoring opportunities, but Weymouth’s centre half pairing of Mike Walker and Sam Poole towered over all the Frome players, and, predictably, dealt with everything in the air without too many problems. Though Darren Chitty had been a spectator for most of the first half, Weymouth looked sharp in the minutes leading up to half time, but some desperate defending ensured that the half time score remained at 0-0.

With Stephenson having arrived at the ground after the match , Frome made a tactical substitution at half time as he was brought on to replace Hulbert, and they were very quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half, and after a Matt Smith header was just tipped over the bar by Jason Matthews in the 49th, they took the lead in the 58th minute as Matt Groves shot home from close range after a Smith shot came back off the post.

Frome were very close to going 2-0 up six minutes later as a Ledgister corner allowed Stephenson to volley from close range only to be denied by an amazing save from Matthews that he probably knew very little about.

At this stage, Frome looked like going on to win the match, but Weymouth then decided to play a high risk game as they started to defend on the half way line, gambling on the fact that they could play the game in the Frome half, but always being at risk to the pace of Smith and Wood on the counter attack.

Unfortunately for Frome, the tactic paid off and after a period of Weymouth pressure, they equalised through Stewart Yetton as he found space behind his marker to shoot home from 10 yards out.

At this stage it could have gone either way, with Weymouth only just managing to deal with the Frome counter attacks, and Frome having to defend deep inside their own half, but then in the 87th minute Yetton showed why he is rated as one of the top strikers in the division as he produced a perfect first touch to a long ball that enabled him to turn and hit a perfect dipping right foot volley over Chitty and into the net for the winner.

Matt Groves was awarded the his second successive “H&B Tyres Man of the Man Award” by match sponsors “The Artful Dodgers”, on an afternoon where, once again, he was a continual thorn in the side of the opposing defence, and with a little more protection from the referee could well have scored more than his one goal. Crowd: 392. Entertainment Value: 4

  • Phase two of Frome’s Missing Link’s project officially reopens

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with further reporting by Frome Times

Phase two of Frome’s Missing Link has officially reopened after being resurfaced, following a successful fundraising campaign.

The 1.3km path, linking the Colliers Way terminus to Elliots Lane in Hapsford, can be accessed from Buckland Road in Great Elm or via the Colliers Way. Originally laid in 2018, its rough surface was unsuitable for horses, bikes, scooters and wheelchairs.

After raising £27,000 last autumn, the route received a £140,000 upgrade, improving access to National Cycle Network route 24. It was formally reopened at a well-attended event on Saturday 26th April, with the mayors of Frome and Radstock in attendance.

The project aims to deliver a multi-user path from Welshmill Lane to the Colliers Way cycle path in Great Elm, creating an unbroken route between Frome and Radstock.

  • Energy entrepreneur to speak in Frome

Renowned energy entrepreneur Howard Johns will be speaking at Frome Town Hall this month giving advice on building a more sustainable future for Frome.

The free talk will run on Tuesday 20th May, from 7pm to 9pm and is ideal for anyone interested in renewable energy and reducing energy bills.

Howard said, “Why are your energy bills so high and what can you do about it? The current energy system is outdated, expensive and harmful to our wallets, our health, the planet and even global stability.

“Every year, we pour thousands into companies that are fuelling the crisis. It’s time to flip the switch.

“Join us to kick-start an energy transformation in Frome: where our homes generate, store and share clean energy. Lower bills, less pollution, real local power.”

  • Licence granted for new Frome nightspot despite local objections

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

A new Frome nightspot can play live music and sell alcohol to its patrons despite concerns raised by neighbouring residents.

Earthaus Property Ltd secured permission in May 2024 to turn four existing flats at 1 Saxonvale into an eight-bedroom hotel, which would overlook the Saxonvale regeneration site in the town centre.

The Saxonvale Ltd has sought to open the ground floor and courtyard area as a café, bar and late night events venue, which could include playing live music and selling pizzas to local customers.

Despite objections from local residents, Somerset Council has agreed to grant the Frome business a licence, meaning it could be up and running within the next few months.

  • Climate adaptation event moves to Cheese and Grain

An event focused on the impact of climate change and how communities can build resilience is moving to the Cheese and Grain on Tuesday 13th May due to high demand for tickets.

Act to Adapt, organised by Frome Town Council, is the first in a series of events and is part of a project co-hosted with Somerset Wildlife Trust and funded by the Somerset Rivers Authority.

Due to strong interest, the venue has been moved to the Cheese and Grain to allow more people to attend.

Frome Town Council’s climate action lead, Matt Mellen, said, “It’s fantastic to see so much interest in the Act to Adapt event, with over 100 people already signed up. We’ve moved the meeting to the Cheese and Grain, so there’s plenty of room for even more people to join us."

  • Free money coaching sessions to launch in Frome

Free money coaching sessions are due to run this month offering support and advice for people managing their finances.

The sessions, which are being run by Holy Trinity Church in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), will provide expert financial advice in the local community over three weeks from Monday 12th May at 5pm at The Bridge Café on Selwood Road.

“With the soaring cost of living over the last few years, we’ve seen how important it is that people know how to successfully manage their money, whatever their income,” explained Gary Lee, who is organising the new course. “It’s vital that we know how to balance what we have, save for emergencies and stay out of debt.

“Our money coaching course is here to equip people in Frome to do that. We’ll look at things like building and balancing a household budget, prioritising spending and keeping our finances stable into the future."

  • Frome man convicted of murdering woman

A Frome man has been convicted of murdering a woman in Portway on the night she planned to end their relationship last year.

  • Frome’s history kept alive at town’s independent museum

Behind the doors of 1 North Parade, Frome Museum is keeping the town’s history alive with fascinating exhibitions and events for all ages.

Based in the town centre, the museum is independently run by enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to share Frome’s heritage.

The museum’s origins lie in the 1956 Frome Historical Exhibition, which led to the formation of the Frome Society in 1958 — the forerunner to today’s museum. Today, the museum is the proud owner of the iconic Frome Literary and Scientific Institution building, which opened in 1869.

Michael Maggs, who has been chair for the past 18 months, has a personal link to the museum, with one of the exhibitions featuring his grandfather’s pharmacy, formerly based at 20 Bath Street.
