FROME Town has seen a change of fortune after winning their fifth game in a row last Saturday to set a new club record of consecutive wins in the Southern Premier League, and taking a giant step in their fight to avoid relegation.
The 1-0 win over King’s Lynn Town FC on Saturday, was the latest in a string of impressive results which has seen the squad lose only one league game since January.
After spending much of the season struggling in the bottom 4, Town are now nine points clear of the drop zone with games in hand on most of their rivals.
Manager Nick Bunyard – serving his first season in charge – told Frome Times, “To have broken the record is a thoroughly deserved result for the team and great news for the whole club. It has been a frustrating season for the fans and a big transitional period, so it’s good to have such a positive achievement.
“This season has gone pretty much how I expected; we lost some good players last year and it was hard to hit the ground running taking over from Adrian Foster. That said, we’ve made gradual progress and have had some spells of good results. The last 12 games have been consistent and there have been a lot of draws we should have won.”
Town drew four of their six games in February, but have since picked up the pace with back-to-back wins in their last five outings.
“I think people get disappointed by the results, but the team is playing well,” Nick added. “Our focus is on consistency now and the one thing on our agenda is staying in the division. Hopefully we can pick up enough points in our next few games to do that.
“The players have been very compact and organised, they know the formations we like to play in and are working very hard at their game. We’ve had a more settled side in recent weeks, which has definitely helped.
“Looking forward, we need to keep up our competitive streak and take more chances – we have been in recent games and it’s paying off. Winning gives the players more confidence and hopefully we can keep the momentum going and secure another season in the Southern League.”
The club, which plays at Blindmans Brewery Stadium on Berkley Road, are now nine points clear with nine games remaining.
The club last week signed 17 year-old Bristol Rovers academy striker Blake Davies, following the departure of veteran player Ricky Hulbert, who notched up 235 appearances for the Town. Ricky has transferred to Toolstation Premier Division side Melksham Town FC.
