Frome Town Council hosted the first in a series of Hustings across Somerton & Frome constituency. All the candidates for the June 8th General Election were invited to speak at Frome Town Football Club on Sunday.
The candidates, David Warburton, Mark Blackman, Theo Simon, Sean Dromgoole and Richard Hadwin for the Somerton and Frome parliamentary seat were all in attendance and members of the public sent in questions which were on a number of topics. A question from Wendy Miller of Fair Frome asking what the candidates where going to do about the increase in referrals to their services – saw a lively and sometimes heated discussion.
Cllr Sheila Gore, who chaired the event said, “We felt it was a duty of Frome Town Council to organise a hustings event so that anyone in Frome wanting to ask a question of the five candidates could do so in person. We were delighted, but not surprised, when so many people arrived to hear what their next MP had to say. It was great to see such a large room packed to the rafters, it just goes to show that people in Frome are engaged in democracy and care about who represents them in Westminster. I urge every registered voter not to waste their vote on 8th June.”
There was also a Frome slant to talking around the big issues in discussion format – How Brexit effects local people, NHS services in Frome, training education and jobs, and problems around lack of affordable housing. The questions will be collated and can be seen at www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk
