Ralph – who presents his own show on FromeFM – with a suitcase studio

FROME FM has been announced as a finalist in The People’s Millions, and will appear on TV later this month in a bid to obtain funding for an innovative project.

The People’s Millions is a grants programme  run in partnership between the Big Lottery Fund and ITV. It asks the public to vote for the projects they want to see supported.

And FromeFM will be calling on your votes during the  ITV1 broadcast on Tuesday 26th November at 6.30pm, as it goes head to head against a community green project in the Forest of Dean.

But first, FromeFM needs your help to be in a promo film to be screened during the broadcast. ITV are coming to Frome on Friday 15th November to film Frome’s bid – and needs crowds of people on TV to show support for the project.

FromeFM is asking The People’s Millions to fund three ‘suitcase studios’ – portable studios which can be taken out into the community. This will enable Frome’s children, local clubs, community groups and charities to make their own radio programmes about the things they are passionate about. One of the aims is to encourage people to participate in radio production, and the grant would also fund a trainer to help new enthusiasts.

FromeFM station manager Phil Moakes said, “This radio studio in a suitcase has been to disaster areas around the world broadcasting lifesaving information about where to get food and vital medical supplies.  It has helped a massive number of people overseas and now we want to use it to help people here too.

“Suitcase studios could be used to cover live football matches and to help PAC counselling families with cancer.  Scouts and Guides groups could use it to gain skills for badges, and Frome Missing Link could publicise the cycle paths.  Singers Knoll Community Group could brighten the day for older residents by taking the suitcase to hear their stories….and children in local schools can let their imaginations run wild creating brilliant new programmes the whole town can hear.”

For more details go to www.frome.fm/suitcase to sign up for the FromeFM newsletter giving information on how to vote, when and where ITV are filming, and how to register your club or charity for a demo of suitcase studio.  FromeFM will also enter you (or your chosen charity) into a prize draw to be the first to use the suitcase if they win!

  • MPs demand answers over RUH home care transfer

The decision follows concerns from staff that the change could disrupt an established and successful operation.

  • Wild About Frome: Time to get seedy!

Hello, it’s Kerry here from the Frome Seed Library.
Your free, permanent seed swap located inside our fantastic town library. We’ve now reached one of the most exciting times of the year for us seedy folk...seed harvesting time!
But why bother saving seed when you could just grab a cheap packet of seeds from the supermarket next spring?
Well, you see each and every seed, from the mighty 25kg coco de mer to the fine dust of the foxglove, is a perfectly evolved vessel of genetics, which given the right conditions will germinate and (hopefully) flourish.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with buying your seeds, the vast majority of the seeds sold in the UK (around 80%) are overwhelmingly imported from overseas, where seeds have been grown in carefully controlled environments. This means your seed has no genetic memory of that soggy summer of 2024, your claggy clay soil, or the recent drought, whereas your plants at home will and for those that have continued to thrive despite everything, well that degree of hyper-local resilience and adaptability is something no seed company can replicate.
As politicians warn of future food shortages, it is crucial to recognise the role of seed in increasing our local food resilience; they are our insurance policy but the type of seed and provenance is key.

People living near Oakfield Academy are calling for greater enforcement of the Safer School Streets scheme, which they say is failing to prevent traffic problems during school drop-off and pick-up times. The scheme was made permanent last September following an 18-month trial.
