FROME’S first ever gin school is now open!

The gin school has been opened by local gin distillery, Still Sisters, which opened in 2020.

Owner Tori said, “We’re so excited to be launching our gin school, it’s the perfect opportunity to come and learn about the process, it’s a real hands-on experience and so much fun!’

“We initially wanted to launch as a gin school, but it’s been a bit of a challenging couple of years. Opening a gin bar in 2020 came with many setbacks, but at last we are here and we can’t wait to start welcoming people back to school!’

At the school, you learn how the Still Sisters make their gin, hear a bit of history about gin, and also learn how to distil and produce your own gin using Still Sister’s handmade, Portuguese 2.5 litre copper stills.

You will be able to select from a range of over 45 botanicals, from seaweed to local honey, whilst sampling the award-winning range of Still Sisters gins and enjoying a delicious cheese and charcuterie board.

At the end of the session, you’ll be able to sample the gin you have made and receive a 70cl bottle of your gin to take home.

Still Sisters opened its gin distillery bar in 2020, distilling a range of gins. Where possible, the sisters source ingredients for their gin from local farms. Their bestselling/award-winning signature gin uses John Hurd’s organic watercress grown in Longbridge Deverill, a few miles outside Frome.

Still Sisters bar is located at 2 Ashton Park, Handlemaker Road next to Tool Station and is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 6pm on Saturday.

To book your slot or purchase gift vouchers please visit www.stillsisters.co.uk

For more details or photos go to www.stillsisters.co.uk or contact Tori or Laura on 01373 474647, or email: hello@stillsisters.co.uk

  • Health information events at Frome Medical Practice

Two health information events are being held at Frome Medical Practice this month, aimed at supporting patients on key health topics.

The first event, a Pelvic Health Talk, is offered as part of the Women’s Health Hub at the practice and takes place on Tuesday 23rd June from 6pm to 7pm.

Organisers say, “Many women experience symptoms of poor pelvic health in silence but it doesn’t have to be that way. Patients are invited to come to the talk to learn more about common pelvic health issues, as well as ways to improve symptoms and support wellbeing. The session will be led by a pelvic health physiotherapist and aims to empower women to take control of their health.”

  • Friends cycle to Rome in once-in-a-lifetime charity adventure

A 1,300-mile journey from Frome to Rome is under way after two friends turned a casual pub idea into a six-week cycling challenge across three countries.

Frome resident Anton Grais set off with friend Joel Rooprai on 17th May and the duo will cycle for six weeks across three countries, crossing rural landscapes, busy cities and challenging mountain routes in the Alps.

They are aiming to raise £1,500, which will be split between Mind, the British Heart Foundation and the Royal British Legion.

The idea came following a ‘tipsy’ trip to the pub last year. They left their jobs – Anton worked in property and Joel in aerospace defence – to undertake the adventure.

  • Community investment tops £250,000 in Saxonvale share offer

More than a quarter of a million pounds has been raised through the Mayday Saxonvale Community Share Offer less than a week after it opened to the public.

Over 260 people have now invested over £256,000 in the campaign to bring Saxonvale, a 12-acre regeneration site in the centre of Frome, into community ownership.

The investment cam-paign allows people to buy community shares in Mayday Saxonvale Community Benefit Society to help fund a bid to purchase and regenerate the town centre site. The group says that if successful, Saxonvale would become one of the UK’s largest and most ambitious community-led regeneration projects.

The campaign is aiming to raise a minimum of £1.5 million from the community alongside £1.2 million of secured social impact lending from Resonance, creating a minimum £2.7 million funding package to support a bid for the site.
