Frome’s new junior netball league finished on a high with over 140 girls participating throughout the season.
Andrea McCall, junior club secretary for Frome Netball Club reports, “For our final league day we were blessed with glorious sunshine and warmth as throughout the winter we had all braved the cold, wind and rain! The league has three age categories U12s, U14s and U16s. Teams have been battling it out over the season and it’s been wonderful to see all the girls improve their netball skills and to enjoy participating in a team sport.
“The U12s had five teams from Frome, Salisbury, Warminster and Westbury. Spires Storm from Salisbury dominated this age category and were the unbeaten winners, with their other team Spires Ice finishing 2nd.
“The U14s had four teams from Frome, Holt, Warminster and Westbury. Holt and Warminster battled for the winning spot on the final day of the league and Wessex Lightning from Warminster just pipped Holt Stars in the last match. They drew on points so the winner was decided on goal difference.
“The U16s had five teams from Frome, Holt, Salisbury, Warminster and Westbury. The level of netball in this age category was amazing to watch. Spires Red from Salisbury, with their outstanding display of netball, were the winners and Wessex Storm were the runners-up.
“The winners received a trophy and medals with the runners-up receiving a trophy. Every girl that took part was awarded with a certificate of participation as we felt everyone deserved something for their commitment throughout the season.
“We also awarded a trophy to each age category for the girl that was awarded the most ‘player of the match’ throughout the season.
“The U12s was awarded to Connie Bates from Frome Tigers, she was voted players’ player 13 times. The U14s was awarded to Libby from Wessex Lightning, she was voted players’ player 8 times and the U16s was awarded to Laura from Spires Red, she was voted players’ player 11 times.
“Due to the success of our first season, Frome Junior Netball Club will continue this league next season.
“Frome Junior Netball League is also holding a Junior Netball Charity Tournament and Family Fun Day on Sunday 24th June at Oakfield Academy 10 am til 4pm and their chosen local charity is ‘We Hear You’ based in Frome.
