The seniors at Orchardleigh Golf Club held their annual presentation at the club on Monday 28th October where the seniors’ captain, Jim Worsley, presented engraved whisky tumblers to all the winners of the monthly medals.
In Division One (20 and under), there were seven different winners: Mike Passingham, Malcolm Lloyd, Mike Bradbury, Chris Bell, Steve Lawrence, Simon Arnold and Jim Worsley.
In Division Two, Simon House and Peter Folland both won twice during the year, while Terry Hulbert, Barry Hall, and Mike Norris completed the winners list.
The ‘Majors’ for Orchardleigh Seniors include The Seniors’ Captain’s Cup, won by Barry Hall, while Bill Blanning took the Drums Hill Masters.
David Chalker won the Vets Vase (70 years and over) and Keith Broughton and Alan Elkington won the Pairs Better Ball Trophy.
The Knock Out Cups see games played throughout the summer. Jim Worsley and Jonathon Reeve won the pairs while Ray Clarke won the singles, gaining The Peter Forth Shield. The Order of Merit (the best eight scores across the season played at Monday roll-ups) saw a tie for first place between Steve Lawrence and Ken White.
The Seniors Championship (a scratch competition played over 36 holes) saw an incredibly tight finish. Malcolm Lloyd shot an uncharacteristic 90 on day one, but then shot the round of the competition on day two, going round in 4 over par for a gross 76, setting the club house target of 166.
Steadiest of the chasing group was Colin Cook – 83 on day one and 82 on day two for a total of 165 – and the winning score by one shot. This was a sweet victory for Colin as Malcolm had beaten him by one shot to win the championship just two years ago. Third place went to Jonathon Reeve with 168.
The Best Nett score on day one was a nett 71 by Andrew Stone – to win the Phil Jefferies Cup.
Malcolm Lloyd had the best nett on day two with a nett 65, beating Tim Edwards on countback to gain The John Scott Trophy.
Tim, however, with nett scores of 73 and 65 won The Mike Small Cup for the best nett overall – an impressive 6 shots under his handicap.
Friendly competitions for the seniors continue at Orchardleigh every Monday morning throughout the winter.
