GP appointments made easy

THE Frome Medical Practice has announced changes to its appointment system and Walk-In clinic, with a new system coming into effect on the 15th November.

The aim is to reduce the time it takes to see a GP and to make the system easier for patients.

“The reason we are bringing in these changes is straightforward,” explains practice partner and GP Dr Rob Taylor. “Through the Patient Participation Group and of course our patients themselves, the message was that there were long waits to see a GP or another health professional.

“We have listened to those concerns of our patients and are therefore introducing Patient Connect, a new system that is designed to be much more convenient, connecting the patient to the right care, at the right time and with the right health professional.”

Under the new system, patients will call the existing appointments number on 01373 301301 where they will then speak to one of the trained care navigators who will ask for a brief reason for the call. A telephone consultation will then be booked at an agreed time for later that same day when one of the practice’s GPs will then call the patient. If the patient needs a follow up face-to-face consultation, this will usually be booked for later that day. The practice is keen to stress that patients will always be seen if needed.

“We have seen how other progressive GP practices in the country have made the model similar to our own new Patient Connect appointments system work successfully for the patient,” adds Dr Taylor. “That is what we are determined to do here, making it both easier and quicker for our patients to access medical care. We are a practice that has recently been awarded an ‘Outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission. It has always been our goal to provide all of our patients with a standard of care that is second to none and we are all working hard to ensure the success of our new appointments system.”

Over the coming weeks prior to the new system coming into effect on the 15th November, explanatory leaflets will be made available at reception. Further information will be made available via the practice website (including a special video) as well as on social media. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions from patients. A Question & Answer session on the new appointments system, open to all patients, will be held at the practice on Wednesday 25th October.

The practice is one of the biggest in the South West, with a patient list of over 29,000.

  • Explore local and social history with new courses

A tutor for Frome Community Education is running a series of local and social history courses and sessions this autumn.

David Lassman has run a local history course for Frome Community Education since 2012, but has now created additional courses based on subjects he has researched for his own interest.

David said, “The course on the town’s history has become very popular over the years and has now established itself as a major part of the heritage landscape. Over the years, many of those who have participated in the course have gone on to secure key positions within Frome’s thriving historical scene.

“But when I was creating my programme for Frome Community Education this term, I felt there was enough research material on other subjects that are close to my heart.”

  • Learn how to mend your clothes with free monthly workshops

Free workshops on how to mend your clothes will be running on the last Saturday of the month until the end of February, hosted by Everyone Needs Pockets.

  • Skatepark plans prompt discussion on inclusivity for girls and young women

Frome Town Council has voted to progress with building a new skatepark at Mary Baily Playing Field, following a majority vote at a recent council meeting.

However, the plans prompted a lengthy discussion among councillors and members of the public over whether they are inclusive enough for girls and young women.

At a meeting on Wednesday 27th August, councillors voted by majority to proceed with the project, which will replace the existing skatepark following a public consultation. The current facility, built 13 years ago at a cost of £34,000, is said to be ‘nearing the end of its life.’

The town council will now work with local volunteer-led group Frome Skatepark Project to develop the new skatepark, expected to cost up to £400,000. The site will be relocated closer to the children’s play park, with safety features to separate the two areas and a commitment to make the facility as accessible as possible.

  • Children’s supporters’ club to launch at Frome Town FC

A Frome Town FC Supporters’ Club for children is due to launch next month, giving local children the opportunity to be a part of the club’s community from a young age.

Frome Town Supporters’ Club Young Robbins is due to launch on 18th October for children aged 0 to 16 years old. On the day, children will be given the chance to walk out with the players as a mascot when Frome Town host Winchester City.

“Our children are the fans of the future,” said one of the organisers, Wayne. “It’s all about getting children out in the fresh air to make friends and support their local side, instead of only watching football on the television.”

The Young Robbins club will cost £5 a season per child and will include a mini pack, key ring, stickers, a chance to be a mascot at the games and walk out with the players and a birthday card signed by the squad.

  • Frome Cheese Show returns with stunts, livestock and award-winning cheese

The Frome Agricultural and Cheese Show returned on Saturday 13th September, bringing thousands of visitors together for a day of celebrating the very best of food, farming, and, of course, cheese.

The day began with sunny weather, and the showground buzzed with energy from start to finish.

Despite rain in the latter part of the afternoon, visitors, traders and competitors remained in high spirits, showing their full support for the show.

At the heart of the day was the Global Cheese Awards, which once again showcased the finest cheesemaking from around the world. This year’s British and Irish Supreme Champion title was awarded to First Milk Cheese Company, Haverfordwest, for their Coloured Vintage Cheddar.

  • Show-stopping Frome Carnival rolls into town

A spectacular Frome Carnival took over the town last week in one of its biggest processions yet.

The colourful event was held on Saturday 20th September and began with the Children’s Carnival in the afternoon, which saw local children, groups, schools and dance and theatre ensembles in fancy dress parade through the roads around Victoria Park.

The evening procession then brought more carnival cheer, with 54 entries, including themed floats, fancy dress and lively music, entertaining crowds which lined the street from the Marston Trading Estate to the town centre.

“We felt it went really well; it was a really good community-spirited carnival,” said one of the organisers, Mandy Morgan. “Everybody on the route was clapping and left in good spirits. There is so much doom and gloom in the world; we all need a lift, and all of our entries were absolutely amazing."
