Fancy trying your hand at kayaking? Then Frome Canoe Club is offering a kayaking Taster Day on Sunday 29th March at the clubhouse next to the Cheese and Grain (BA11 1BE).

The cost is £5 for a minimum of 30 minutes paddling time and is suitable for children aged 9+.

“Come and have a go!” says the club. “The aim of the taster day is to introduce beginners to kayaking in a safe and enjoyable environment. We provide all the specialist kit participants will need for the session, which will include some coaching to get started and some fun activities too.

“If people decide to take it further, then the club meets weekly for training sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings between 7pm and 9pm during the spring and summer months.

“The club offers an extensive programme of events, including white water kayaking with a strong slalom focus competing in many events during the year.

“The club runs courses to help paddlers improve their skills.”

More information about the club can be found on the website: www.frome-canoe-club.org.uk

  • Flyte return to Cheese and Grain

English singer-songwriters Flyte will be returning to Frome next month for a show at the Cheese and Grain.

Formed by longtime friends Will Taylor and Nick Hill, the band will perform on Friday 11th September.

Flyte will be returning to Frome after releasing recordings last year from a day spent at the Bert Jansch Studio. They also performed at the Tree House in 2024.

Organisers said, “Flyte have quietly built a reputation as one of the UK’s most thoughtful and emotionally resonant modern bands. Across acclaimed releases including The Loved Ones, This Is Really Going To Hurt and their 2023 self-titled album Flyte, the duo have carved out a sound that blends classic singer-songwriter intimacy with rich, contemporary production and breathtaking vocal harmony.

  • Frome impress against higher league Salisbury

Pre-season friendly: Saturday 25th July
Frome Town 3-0 Salisbury City

Frome Town delivered another victory in pre-season, this time against higher league opposition in Salisbury, as they ran out 3-0 winners in front of the Badgers Hill faithful.

Brian Dutton’s side fashioned a good chance to open the scoring ten minutes into the game when a cross came in from the left searching for Jaiden Bartolo but Kyle Phillips was very quick off his line to gather the ball.

The first Frome chance came in the 20th minute after a great ball from George Dowling to find Zack Ali down the left. The full-back continued his run into the box and his effort was a whisker past the far post.

Salisbury then hit the bar with a Harry Thomas header from a corner before the hosts opened the scoring two minutes before half-time. It was Archie Ferris with a neat pass into Zac Drew down the right and the number 10 showed great composure to poke the ball past Will Henry in goal to give the Dodge the lead going into the break.

  • Residents rally to save 300-year-old pub

Local residents are rallying to save a historic pub in East Woodlands, which has been at the centre of village life for generations.

The Horse and Groom closed in 2020 during the Covid pandemic.

The newly formed Friends of the Horse and Groom group is seeking Asset of Community Value (ACV) status through Somerset Council, which would give the community an opportunity to explore buying the pub.

The pub was run for around 20 years by Rick Squire, known as Rickie, and his partner Kathy Barrett. In March 2020, Rick suffered multiple strokes after becoming seriously ill during an evening service and died two weeks later. Following his death and the pressures created by the pandemic, Kathy made the decision to close the pub.

Somerset has been declared as being in drought after weeks of hot, dry weather have left rivers, reservoirs and groundwater levels under pressure.

The county is among the areas covered by the Environment Agency’s Wessex drought area, which also includes Dorset, Wiltshire and south Gloucestershire.

The declaration comes after July saw just 7% of expected rainfall across England, falling to 1% across southern England.

The fundraiser will raise money for TK and his family while he undergoes treatment and is unable to work. The studio is also planning other fundraising events including a raffle and a gig at a local pub.

Studio owner Jo Black said, “TK has recently learnt that his testicular cancer has metastasized and he now needs aggressive chemo to treat it, lasting for at least the next nine weeks.
