Pupils from Hayesdown First School donated more than 40 carrier bags’ worth of food to Fair Frome Food Bank last term.
Following the school’s Harvest Festival last month, their generous donations were given to the Food Bank to help with the nearly 1,500 food parcels that the charity hands out every year.
The school’s Harvest Festival service also gave the pupils a chance to learn more about food sustainability. Year 1 classes have learnt about seasonal foods and why it is important to eat local produce, while the Year 2 and Year 4 classes have looked at food miles and where the ingredients for popular meals come from.
Children in Year 3 have calculated the cost of meals such as fish and chips or macaroni cheese and highlighted how it is important not to waste food. Even the reception class has been involved with learning about the food journey by retelling the story of the Little Red Hen.
Headteacher Julia Battersby said, “It was a joy to come together to celebrate harvest and understand the importance of sharing food so no one goes hungry. Our children were enthusiastic to share their learning around food sustainability, which reflects our school values of responsibility, confidence and being happy and healthy. We cannot thank our wonderful parent community enough for their generosity and we know that Fair Frome will put it to good use for local families.”
