FOR the first time in the history of Orchardleigh Golf Club, the ladies’ section reached the finals of the prestigious Rogers Cup ably captained by Sue Sweet. This cup is an annual team handicap knockout Somerset County competition consisting of seven players.
Each round of the Rogers Cup is played on a neutral course, allocated by the organising committee. Orchardleigh was fortunate to have a bye in the first round but went on to beat Stockwood Vale at Farrington Park, Wells at Wheathill and Worlebury at Minehead to reach the final which was played on Sunday 4th September at The Mendip Golf Club against Wheathill.
The team players were Nicola Hawkes, Anne Regler, Sue Marshall, Ann James, Lorraine Collings (captain), Diana Bullock and Sonia Probert. They were assisted by caddies Chris Hawkes, Steve Regler, Malcolm Lloyd, Liz Attenborough, John Collings, Anne Carpenter and Vron Jefferies.
Although thunderstorms were forecast, the day’s weather turned out to be a lot better than hoped and, in an exciting match, the result was decided by the last pair out who took it to the 18th hole and it was all on the last putt.
Unfortunately, Orchardleigh were pipped on that last hole, so Wheathill took the cup, winning 4/3 with Orchardleigh receiving the runners-up trophy. Nevertheless the team had a great time competing in the competition throughout the summer and there is always next year.
The Sally Lock Trophy that took place at Orchardleigh recently was won by Lin Handley. It is a two round stableford competition that takes place on consecutive Thursdays.
Lin brought in a score of 43 points in the first round with Sue Chalker and Sue Sweet on 40 points. In the second round the best score was Anne Carpenter with 42 points and Lin Handley along with several other players came in with 37. Lin Handley was the winner with an aggregate score of 80 pts and Sue Chalker was runner-up with 77.
