IT has been confirmed that popular BBC drama Poldark has been filmed on the cobbled streets of Frome.
There was a frenzy of speculation as to whether Frome was being used as the setting for the hit series Poldark, but BBC Somerset has now confirmed that the rumours are true.
Production company Mammoth Screen, who is producing Poldark, told the Frome Times that filming had taken place in Gentle Street and areas around St John the Baptist Church last week. They also said the series will air on BBC1 early 2016 but had no specific dates until filming had finished.
The publicist for Poldark told the Frome Times, “I was there for a few days whilst filing took place and thought Frome was a beautiful place. I spent some time at St John’s Church and everyone made us feel very welcome. I bought some lovely charity Christmas cards as well.
“The residents were also fantastic and very accommodating whilst the filming was going on.
“Gentle Street certainly reflected the period in which Poldark was set in, so I think the filming looked great.”
Both Gentle Street and areas around St John the Baptist Church were closed off for filming, with tight security everywhere. But lips remained very tight on the details until all was revealed.
Revd Colin Alsbury from St John the Baptist Church said, “It is marvelous that Frome has been chosen for filming and the church is very pleased to offer its services for the purposes of creative media. As to what they are filming, I couldn’t possibly comment!”
The BBC1 drama television series is set in the late 18th century and the first series sees Ross Poldark return to his native Cornwall after fighting in the American Revolution, and then re-opening the family tin mine after being crossed in love.
In April this year, the BBC announced that a second series had been commissioned, much to the delight of millions of fans.
