FRIENDS of the River Frome have launched a new project, Frome River Watch, to help monitor the health of the river.
The local group plans to recruit a group of volunteer ‘River Watchers’ who will keep an eye on the condition of the river and its surrounding environment.
“This should help us respond to issues quickly, and help us plan any improvements too,” says the group.
“We’ve divided the stretch of the river between Spring Gardens and Blatchbridge into six zones and are looking to appoint volunteers to walk through their zone at least once a month and report on the condition of the river and any problems or opportunities for action which they observe.
“This will include any changes to wildlife, problems affecting the river (such as pollution or blockages) as well as spotting development notices which might have an impact on the river.
“Another important responsibility will be to conduct regular water quality tests that will be reported back to the authorities. In fact, Frome Town Council will be erecting a notice board near the library showing the current state of the river.
“We’re looking for volunteers to start in January who are able to commit to being a River Watcher for at least 12 months. We’ll provide training and equipment and take you through the protocols for reporting to the Environment Agency and Wessex Water.
“This is a voluntary role and any reasonable out-of-pocket expenses may be reimbursed with the agreement of the Friends of the River Frome treasurer. River Watch volunteers are also covered by the Friends of River Frome personal and public liability insurance.
“The Frome River Watch scheme is supported by and works closely with Frome Town Council, the Environment Agency, Wessex Water, Bristol Avon Rivers Trust, Somerset Wildlife Trust, and TWIST (Transforming Waterways In Somerset Towns).
