FROME Community College has had its GCSE, AS and A-level performance ranked in league tables released this month.
The league tables, based on data published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, shows that 44 percent of pupils leave with five GCSE’s including English and maths at grades A-C.
This is a slight decrease on last year’s figure of 46 percent and is below the county average of 49 percent and the national average of 49.8 percent.
In AS and A-levels, where schools are ranked on a points system based on grades achieved, the average points per pupil was 677.1, up on the previous two years. This figure compares to a county average of 732.2 and the national average of 739.1
Principal Wendy Missons said, “I am happy with the results although you may ask why; I’m not happy with how they are presented.
“Our post-16 [AS and A- level] results are well above the last two years.
“Our attendance is going up year on year.
“My problem with the GCSE results is that they don’t show vocational qualifications which we do quite a lot of.
Wendy Missons added that when vocational qualifications are taken into account, this year’s results are the second highest the college has ever posted.
She said, “We’re going from strength to strength.”
However the principal said that there was still a lot of work to be done, and that the college would be striving to improve.
“We’ll be working their socks off. They deserve to do really, really well. Every single qualification is an additional chance to get on in life.
“We’ve instilled that into them; exams aren’t everything, we want them to be well rounded individuals but in the world we live in it’s points make prizes.”
