Issue 319 – A Happy Hydro New Year

Despite the doom and gloom of cutbacks and the recession, there is great news for Frome!

After over 10 years of fund-raising, challenges and setbacks, work is about to start on the construction of Harry’s Hydro at a site adjoining Critchill School.
Work is scheduled to start at the beginning of this month, and it is aimed to have the hydrotherapy facilities ready to open in the autumn of this year.
Fund-raising, both locally and nationally has produced some £300,000 which will cover the building costs. The aim of the project is to be self-financing when open and operating. The trustees are still actively fundraising to cover equipment and ancillary costs.
The hydrotherapy pool will be a community facility available to user groups, as well as serving the special needs of children at Critchill School. The trustees have a number of groups already eager to make regular bookings when the facility opens. The groups range from toddlers to the elderly who also have special needs. There is currently some spare capacity for additional user groups, but demand is expected to be high. The pool will be open seven days a week from 9.00am to 9.00pm depending on demand.
Why Harry’s Hydro project was started is best explained in Paula Fox’s own words, “Our son Harry Fox was born on 1st December 1998. In the maternity ward at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, Harry caught an infection and suffered a complete shut-down on day four. He spent weeks in intensive care, but despite surviving, he was left profoundly brain damaged.
“This is a nightmare for any parent. Harry was about as bad as it gets – he couldn’t move, swallow, see, hear or blink. Our job was to make him as comfortable as possible, and give him love.
“We discovered the best thing we could do for Harry was to swoosh him around in a warm pool. He would relax completely, and there was a sparkle in his eye. The only time he ever moved anything was when we took him to a very warm pool. This tested ‘blind’ child would look at the lights in the wall and when we turned round to walk the other way – he would struggle and move his head to see them properly on the new side. We knew he loved this, and he would come out completely loose and relaxed and content, and he’d sleep soundly. It was his way of smiling.
“The best form of treatment for Harry and people like him is hydrotherapy – physio and multi-sensory stimulation in a specially heated facility.
“We learnt that although Harry was an extreme case, hydrotherapy can help a huge range of ailments, from arthritis to cerebral palsy, and it’s extremely effective for those with mental, sensory and learning difficulties as well. Hydrotherapy, however, while being simple and effective, is not that easy to come by. Harry did not have access to the one therapy which would have brought him the most benefit and stimulation.
“Harry died at 13 months, on 28th December 1999. He’d fought valiantly through numerous infections and illnesses – a real trooper, but he’d decided to go to the real 2000 millennium birthday party.”
Peter Bennett, Harry’s Hydro Trustee said, “Paula and Digby Fox launched the charity and started fundraising in June 2000, and they have invested a huge amount of enthusiasm and energy into the project. Dame Ellen MacArthur agreed to be patron of the new charity. There were two sides to the project – researching and learning all there is to know about hydrotherapy and pools; and secondly, finding the funds to make it possible. Expert advice was sought on the best design of the pool and facilities, with the invaluable input of Dr Helen Whitelock, who is a world renowned authority on hydrotherapy and who for several years was a lecturer at the Bath National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, which is the UK’s leading establishment for training hydrotherapists. Harry’s Hydro research and design won a national award.
“There is a lack of hydrotherapy facilities in the Frome area, and a severe shortage of capacity in the region. There is little chance of any government or council facilities being provided in this age of cut-backs. Harry’s Hydro is an example of David Cameron’s dream of ‘the big society’ – local people getting on with projects and not just waiting for someone else!
“The project has been driven by Paula Fox through good times – when the fundraising was going well. And through the less good times – when doubt arose over use of the Critchill School site; when complications occurred with the lease from Somerset County Council; and when the funding for Critchill children to use the pool was withdrawn. The intervention of Frome Town Council last year saved the project from collapse.
“The trustees are enormously grateful to the people of Frome who have contributed to the fund and to those who have given their time and effort in making this project a reality. A list of donors and other information is available on our web-site www.harrys-hydro.org.
“Paula Fox has been supported by a loyal but small band of trustees. Harry’s Hydro Appeal is now in need of enthusiastic volunteers from the community to help with a very varied range of tasks. In particular, we are looking for someone with hydrotherapy or physiotherapy background to assist on pool use and policies. We are also looking for assistance with removal of top-soil from the site, and the surfacing of the car park.”
The contract has been awarded to Westcountry Leisure Spa & Pool Services Ltd, who are specialist pool builders based in Torquay and covering the South West. The actual building will have timber construction and is being supplied by specialist company Norwegian Log Buildings Ltd.
If you are interested in finding out more about Harry’s Hydro, either as a potential user, or as a volunteer helper or donor, please contact Peter Bennett on 01373 472406 or Helen Woodhead on 01373 474127.

Frome College’s robotics team achieved major success last month, finishing third in a regional technology challenge and winning a sustainability award.

The team attended the South West Regional First Tech Challenge in Bristol, where they were tasked with designing and building a robot capable of collecting and scoring artefacts into a target.

The First Tech Challenge is a competition enabling young people to develop skills and broaden understanding of STEM education and career pathways.

After repairing some minor damage to their machine upon arrival, the team held first place for most of the day. However, they were beaten in the final round, finishing third overall.

  • Initiative launches to improve river’s health

An initiative to help residents take practical action for the River Frome’s health has launched.

Frome Families for the Future is running the project as part of their River Vision Project, aiming to protect the river by reducing chemicals and water use while helping residents save money.

Coordinator Lizzie Venning said, “The campaign features beautifully designed posters created by local artist Tamsyn Gill, offering everyday tips that, when done as a community, can make a big difference to our town’s precious river.

“The River Vision Project has developed a series of five posters and a postcard with simple, everyday tips you can try at home.

“The River Frome plays an important role in managing climate challenges like flooding and drought. A healthy river purifies our drinking water, supports biodiversity, helps regu-late temperatures and improves mental health."

  • School bids farewell to ‘exceptional’ caretaker of 14 years

A caretaker has retired after 14 years at Hayesdown First School and has been remembered for his dedicated work in all weathers.

At a recent celebration event to mark his years of service, Tom Roughley was given several gifts to commemorate his time at the school, including a special ‘Golden Broom’ award.

The children also sang You’ll Never Walk Alone, celebrating his Liverpudlian roots and love of Liverpool Football Club.

The school described Tom as an ‘exceptional caretaker and custodian’ who would work in all weathers to ensure the lights were on and the site remained safe, warm and secure.

A spokesperson for the school, Charlotte Button, said, “We held a special assembly to show our gratitude, starting with a poem read by the children in Year 4. This was followed by a specially adapted song sung by the staff, Retire/Together – a re-worked version of Go West/Together by the Pet Shop Boys.

  • Future of Frome and Saxonvale site discussed at Chamber event

The future of business in Frome was discussed at a special networking breakfast last month which brought together local businesses and representatives from Mayday Saxonvale, the local company behind plans to redevelop the town centre site.

Frome Chamber of Commerce hosted the event at the Cheese and Grain which explored ideas around business growth, employment space and economic activity, alongside how firms can have a stronger voice in shaping Frome’s future. The meeting also heard about the vision for Saxonvale site from directors of the Mayday Saxonvale.

Peter Quintana, chair of Frome Chamber, invited attendees to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the town. Four main themes emerged from the discussion: skills and education, transport and infrastructure, support for business growth and community integration and strengthening the local business voice.

  • Concert to raise funds for church renovation

A gala to raise funds for a major church renovation project is being held on Sunday 19th April.

The concert, titled Glorious Baroque, will take place at Christ Church to support Christ Church Future, a project focused on roof repairs and improvements to the main entrance to provide easy access for everyone. The church has applied for permission for the work and hopes renovations will begin in the autumn.

The evening will start with a celebratory reception of fizz and canapés, sponsored by Wayne Kelly Independent Funeral Directors and Latham Scaffolding Ltd, followed by performances from professional musicians giving their time for the cause. Violinist Lucy Hewson will play parts from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, alongside other musicians and soprano Hannah Drury performing operatic arias.

Church Warden Alan Burgess said, “We are so grateful to the musicians for giving their time and offering such a wonderful musical feast. We hope lots of people will join us for what is sure to be a fabulous evening.”

  • Residents urge ‘stronger’ bypass safety measures

Residents have said Somerset Council’s plans to improve safety on the Frome bypass do not go far enough, calling for stronger measures to be introduced.

Last month, Somerset Council shared proposals for the A361 Frome bypass following five fatalities in five years. The plans include lowering the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph, introducing central hatching to narrow lanes where possible, cutting back vegetation to improve visibility, and upgrading road markings.

Residents say the measures will have little impact on reducing the risk of serious accidents. One said, “The reduction in speed limit of 10 miles per hour, with no monitoring measures in place, will have little impact. When we are talking about fatalities, I would want to see stronger measures put in place, and it is disappointing that such measures are not being implemented.”

  • Local vintage transport gathering back this month

The Westbury Transport and Vintage Gathering will return this month for its 32nd year, showcasing military vehicles, stationary engines, tract-ors, bikes, motorbikes and stalls.

The event takes place over the weekend of Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April at the top field off Westbury Road, near the junction with The Hollow, BA13 4TT.

Event organiser Keith Miller described it as “a great day out for all the family.”

He said, “A short time ago we were able to enjoy the magnificent ploughing match on the opposite side of the road, and we are similarly looking forward to our event.

“No red tape, just turn up. A plaque is always awarded to a notable exhibitor. Last year it went to Ray Davies of Bratton for his continual support and interest.”

  • Town Council bins to be managed by new contractor

A new contractor has been appointed to manage waste across the open spaces run by Frome Town Council, following ongoing con-cerns from residents about overflowing bins.

Councillors voted unanimously at the Full Council meeting on 25th March to award the £56,000 contract to Busy Bees, following issues with bin collections under former contractor idverde and a subsequent nine-month agreement with Somerset Council.

The town council said there were concerns that bins remained unemptied for consecutive days during both these arrangements.

Environment Manager Rob Holden said he was hopeful the new contract would make a significant difference.

“It’s a high bar. I think it will be an incomparable difference between the levels of service between the two operators,” he said.
