Frome Museum has just been officially ‘Accredited’ by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).
Frome Museum maintains a unique collection of artefacts, documents, costumes, maps and pictures relating to Frome’s heritage. Established in 1966, the museum has grown and developed to become an established element in the life of the town.
The museum is custodian to a unique collection of glass slides from the Singer’s art metal factory, maintains an archive collection which is an ongoing record of the town and welcomes visitors from all over the world. The permanent display relating to the town’s industrial past is complemented by a supplementary exhibition which changes every six or eight weeks during the season (March to November). None of this would be possible without the hard work and skills of the volunteers both past and present.
The MLA’s Museum Accreditation Scheme sets nationally agreed standards for all museums in the UK. Frome Museum’s award proves that it measures up, meeting the guidelines on how it is run, how it looks after its collections and the services it provides to its visitors.
Alan Davis, chairman of Frome Museum Trustees said, “For a small museum totally reliant on volunteers, achieving Accreditation is a significant achievement. Accredited museums play a key role in caring for the UK’s cultural heritage,and we are delighted that the skills and professional service that our volunteers provide to the public have been recognised as meeting a national standard. ”
