Bat Print Studio based at the Silk Mill offers great opportunities for artists and beginners to develop their skills in all forms of printmaking.
The studio was built by artists Michael Gill and Steve Clarkson during Lockdown and despite the different pressures posed by the pandemic, the studio has begun to grow by offering courses and a membership scheme which allows the creative community of Frome and beyond to experience working with rare and beautiful presses as well as the facilities and space to edition hand printed artworks.
The studio is a must-see experience for enthusiasts of lino and woodcut printing with several historic proofing presses which have the potential to print large scale designs. Members also have the opportunity to exhibit their work in the large, airy and light filled studio.
The jewel in the crown of Bat Print though is the extremely rare French wooden press – “La Bete A Cornes “ – The Beast with Horns. The only such press at an open access print studio in the country, which allows the artist to make traditional stone lithography prints.
Bat Print Studio has courses covering a wide range of techniques and processes from alternative photography to personal screen printing tuition. The younger generation of Frome is also catered for with Bat Art School offering Saturday classes for young artists aged 6 -16. GCSE & A level art tuition is also available with Michael Gill, former Director of Art at the prestigious Merchant Taylors School.
