Liberal Democrats storm to victory in Somerton and Frome by-election – By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

THE Liberal Democrats “are back in the West Country” after storming to victory in the Somerton and Frome by-election.

Voters went to the polls across the constituency yesterday to choose their new MP following the resignation of David Warburton, who won the seat back in 2015. The Lib Dems were confident of victory throughout the evening, claiming that they had won before verification of the ballots had even been concluded.

But this optimism was ultimately not misplaced as their candidate Sarah Dyke overturned a majority in excess of 19,000, leaving her Conservative counterpart Faye Purbrick in a distant second place.

Ballot boxes began to steadily arrive at the Royal Bath and West Showground in Evercreech soon after the polls had closed at 10pm.

Less than two hours later, with the ballots still being verified, the Lib Dems claimed that they were going to win, stating, “We’ve not just won, we’ve romped home in Somerton and Frome. The Conservative vote is in free-fall.”

Conservative unitary councillor David Fothergill – who oversaw his party’s defeat at the local elections in Somerset just over a year earlier – admitted it had been “a difficult campaign”, citing both the national picture and the allegations surrounding Warburton.

He said, “He [Warburton] went missing in action for 18 months, and that has created a wave of ill-feeling, so people now see an opportunity to have their voice heard.”

Turnout in the by-election was 44.23% – lower than the turnout in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, and far below the 75.6% turnout at the last general election in 2019.

As the counting moved forward, the pile of votes for Sarah Dyke grew steadily and substantially, and by the time the announcement of the result, her victory seemed all but certain.

Six of the eight candidates took to the stage just before 2.50am – with Lorna Clarke of the Christian People’s Alliance and UKIP candidate Peter Richardson having left the premises before the result was confirmed.

The full result of the by-election is:

  • Lorna Corke (Christian Peoples Alliance): 256
  • Peter Richardson (UK Independence Party): 275
  • Rosie Mitchell (Independent): 635
  • Neil Guild (Labour): 1,009
  • Bruce Evans (Reform UK): 1,303
  • Martin Dimery (Green): 3,944
  • Faye Purbrick (Conservative): 10,179
  • Sarah Dyke (Liberal Democrat): 21,187

The result gives Sarah Dyke a majority of 11,008 – higher than the majority enjoyed by Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey (who made numerous visits to the constituency during the campaign), and not far off the 12,000-plus majority of Bath MP Wera Hobhouse.

The party achieved a 28% swing in the constituency, winning their fourth by-election since 2019 and their second in the south west, following a victory of a similar scale in Tiverton and Honiton back in June 2022.

In her victory speech, Sarah Dyke thanked her family, friends and Somerset Council colleagues, stating, “It’s your love and support that’s made this possible, and it’s made me put everything into this campaign – this is your victory as much as it is mine.”

Dyke is one of two Lib Dem councillors for the Blackmore Vale division, which comprises numerous small villages near the Somerset-Dorset border at the southern edge of the constituency.

Having previously served as a district councillor, she won her seat on the new unitary authority in May 2022, defeating the Conservatives’ strategist for defeating the Lib Dems in rural constituencies, Hayward Burt.

In a speech where she was often close to tears, Dyke thanked the constituents for showing faith in her – including Tory and Green voters who “lent her” their votes. She said, “Thank you for welcoming me into your homes, your town and parish halls, and your businesses – from Frome to Henstridge, and from Somerton to Wincanton.

“Thank you for talking to me about your lives and your communities, for sharing your worries and hopes for the future. I promise to be an MP standing up for you in Westminster. Tonight has been a stunning and historic victory for the Liberal Democrats – and it shows. once and for all, the Liberal Democrats are back in the West Country!”

Dyke, who lives in Cucklington near Wincanton, said she would “take this woeful government on”, describing Rishi Sunak’s administration as a “circus of chaos”.

She added, “I am truly honoured by the faith of the people of Somerton and Frome. It is humbling to be elected to represent the place where my family has lived for generations and farmed for over 200 years.

“This is a wonderful part of the world – but like so many places across the country, we have been left down and taken for granted for far too long by a tired and out-of-touch Conservative government.

“While families struggle to put food on the table, or pay their mortgage, or simply see their GP, this government is too busy being a circus of chaos. The people of Somerton and Frome have said it loud and clear tonight: enough is enough.

“To the mother in Milborne Port who told me how she couldn’t get a dentist appointment for her children: I hear you, and I will fight for you. To the man who told me how his elderly mother sat on the floor for 13 hours waiting for an ambulance to arrive: I hear you, and I will fight for you.

“To the amazing farmers of Somerset, the custodians of our countryside – you are my family, and I hear you, and I will fight for you. To all of you, seeing your energy bills, mortgage payments and food shop go up and up, with no end in sight, I hear you, and I will fight for you.”

Davey is expected to visit Frome this morning to congratulate Dyke.

Bill Revans, the Lib Dem leader of Somerset Council, said the result would ensure a louder voice for the county’s issues within parliament and Whitehall.

He said, “This result means we have a voice in Westminster with the same political alignment as the council, which gives us a more effective voice for Somerset. I’m confident that will help us get our message across about the issues we have.”

Dyke will most likely be formally sworn in as the MP on Monday 4th September, when parliament returns from the summer recess.

  • Disability-friendly car available for community use thanks to local man

A disability-friendly car is now available for community use in Frome to help wheelchair users and housebound residents get out and about, thanks to a local man.

The vehicle was purchased last year by Frome resident Pete Dayman-Johns and, thanks to funding from Frome Selwood Rotary, which has paid for specialist insurance, residents can now book the car to drive people to medical appointments, groups or shopping.

Pete said, “I took it upon myself to get the car last year and start this scheme because there aren’t many disability-friendly taxis available in Frome as quickly as my car can be. I like helping people and this is my way of doing that.

“This isn’t a common thing in other towns. It was an idea I had after learning that so many people are struggling to get out and about and to medical appointments.”

  • Frome volunteers knit hearts for palliative care patients

Frome volunteers have knitted more than 100 hearts to support palliative care patients and their families.

The hearts were donated to the Royal United Hospital in Bath following an appeal, coordinated through the Co-operative Funeralcare – Frome, which called on local knitters to create hearts using a specific pattern.

The appeal came after a Frome resident introduced the team at the Co-op to the Compassion Memory Hearts scheme following her uncle’s death, when a heart had been left on his pillow.

The scheme sees volunteers knit pairs of small hearts. One heart is left on the patient’s pillow, while the other is given to their family as a keepsake, offering comfort and connection when they cannot be together.

  • Frome woman raises over £36,500 for cancer charity with running challenge

Frome fundraiser Rachel Clark has raised over £36,500 for a cancer counselling charity through a mile-a-day running challenge.

Rachel ran a mile a day in 2019, 2024 and 2025 running in all weathers and encouraging residents to join her and donate to We Hear You (WHY), a cancer counselling charity in Frome.

Rachel said, “Over the years approximately 10,205 epic people joined in with the challenge; the youngest was four years old, the oldest was 77, thousands interacted online, we ran through all the seasons, from heatwaves to blizzards.

“The ripple effect of 365 was magic. Some of you were inspired to take up running and many of you took up fundraising for WHY yourselves. Fundamentally we made a difference, in so many ways. This challenge was never about distance; it was always more than just a mile.”

  • Somerset Council faces ‘lingering death’ over £73m budget gap

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council is facing a ‘lingering death’ in the face of an estimated £73m budget gap, councillors and auditors have warned.

The council recently launched a consultation on its initial budget proposals, including just over £20m of new savings or increases in its existing fees and charges.

Clive Heaphy, the council’s interim chief financial officer, had previously admitted that the authority would require exceptional financial support from the government for a third consecutive year in order to balance its books without totally exhausting its reserves.

But members of the council’s audit committee have warned that the council may have left it too late to turn things around – making effective bankruptcy increasingly likely.

This comes after external auditors Grant Thornton warned that the council had to go faster to change the way it delivered services, issuing three statutory recommendations or ‘red cards’ against the authority.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – New Year in the garden

Now the festive season is behind us, we can start planning for the year ahead.

The weather will be mixed but dry days give us a chance to do our bit now for wildlife – whether we have a pot outside the back door, our own garden or access to an allotment, green space or one of Frome’s community gardens. The first step is to resist the urge to tidy up.

That pile of ‘rubbish’ in the corner – dead grass stems, dried leaves, twigs and branches – will provide a wonderful habitat for a range of wildlife, from tiny spiders and beetles through to hibernating hedgehogs. Allowing even a small part of a garden to keep its winter debris will be a great help. Late winter is often the toughest time for birds, when many of the berries have been stripped. Feeding them (being mindful of cleanliness to minimise the risk of spreading disease) has the added bonus of bringing them close – a delight to watch in the dark days of winter.

  • Charity keeps Lisa Wells’ memory alive with successful fundraising year

A Frome charity has reported a successful year of fundraising in 2025 in memory of Lisa Wells, who died from bowel cancer in 2019.

Lisa’s Army helps cancer patients create lasting memories by providing days out, experiences and special treat boxes for those going through chemotherapy.

The charity was set up in 2020, after Lisa died from bowel cancer on 17th August 2019. She launched the charity before she died and, ever since, the team has been dedicated to fundraising, holding events and working hard to offer support, help and positive experiences to individuals facing a cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

“We have had a good year of fundraising and raised nearly £5,000,” said Lisa’s mum, Deanna Wells. “Fundraising can be hard and we do need more than that to keep going properly but we have a really dedicated committee. We have a few new ones join us. Lisa started this charity; we have got to keep it going.”

  • Pancake race to mark Valentine’s Day

Planning is underway for a family-friendly pancake race event in Frome Town Centre to jointly mark Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day 2026.

The ‘Stacks of Love’ pancake race will run on Saturday 14th February and will feature themed crafts and games for all ages and a crêpe stall. Ginny Adams of local theatre company Rare Species will act as compère for the day.

At ten-minute ‘waves’ throughout the event, six pancake race contestants will set off from the Blue Boar and race up to the Boyle Cross, flipping their (fabric) pancakes as they go, in heart-shaped frying pans. There will be themed waves for runners aiming for a pancake race personal best, children, grandparents and some ‘open’ categories. For those not keen on running, there will be static pancake-tossing competitions at the Boyle Cross.
