Local author ‘unzips’ the history of Frome

LOCAL writer, Crysse Morrison, known for her knowledge of Frome, has written a book about the ‘unzipped’ past and present of the town from its origins to now – finding out why the town has become so popular.
‘Frome Unzipped’ features the story of Frome from its origins to the present day, tracing the independent and creative spirit of Frome through the artisans, dissenters and free-thinkers of many generations to create the identity of the town today.
Crysse, who moved to Frome in 1987, falling quickly in love with the creativity and quirky independence of the town, was asked to write a book about Frome by the managing director of Hobnob Press, who publishes local history books.
Previously, Crysse has written two novels, which were published by Hodder & Stoughton and her poems have been published by Burning Eye. She also has written a non-fiction, educational series for MacDonald Educational and has been a feature columnist for Writers’ News for many years. Speaking to the Frome Times, Crysse said, “I chose to bring the content of my book right up to date because there’s currently so much dispute about how Frome has become so popular. I wanted to show how the seeds for regeneration were always here – and it was that potential which attracted the newcomers who helped to create the town we have today.
“I thought the research would take four months, but it actually took me six. There are a lot of good books written on the historical aspect, and I talked to more than 80 people, recording and transcribing their interviews. Once I had all the material, it felt a bit like doing a 5,000-piece jigsaw. I enjoyed every aspect – everyone I spoke to was really helpful.
“Everyone I spoke to opened my eyes to aspects I didn’t know about the town. I am massively appreciative, and I look everywhere with new eyes now!
“I have been particularly pleased with one reviewer’s comment stating that my book is ‘written in a lively and funky style which makes it thoroughly readable’.”
