A local charity that aims to create new, safe, off-road paths connecting Frome with surrounding areas has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help complete a 1.3km section of path near Great Elm.
Frome’s Missing Links, a charity run entirely by volunteers, has set a target to raise £20,000 through its crowdfunder. This will unlock additional funding from a generous private donor and Sustrans, the sustainable travel organisation, bringing the total to £100,000.
All funds raised will be used to put a long-lasting tarmac surface on Phase 2 of the ‘missing link’, which runs from Great Elm to Hapsford.
Thousands of volunteer hours have been spent seeking permissions, clearing the route—at times pulling up old railway tracks—laying base layers, and planting and maintaining verges to preserve the area as an important wildlife corridor.
“At present, it’s a rough, stony surface, not accessible to all,” says trustee Helen Johnstone.
The charity received an initial generous pledge in the spring to match public donations, enabling them to take the final step of laying tarmac, provided the work is completed within twelve months.
“Now, with additional funding pledged from Sustrans too, this feels very achievable,” says Helen. “The new surface will allow all users to enjoy the path, as well as ensure it remains usable year-round.”
Chair of Frome’s Missing Links, Richard Ackroyd, added, “Please help—every donation, no matter how small, will bring us closer to our target, and we simply can’t do it without public support. We’re offering rewards for certain donations too, from key rings to named benches, but these are limited, so it’s worth looking into sooner rather than later.”
Frome’s Missing Links launched the crowdfunding campaign during a sold-out talk by journalist, podcaster, and author Laura Laker at Frome Town Hall. Laura spoke about her new book Potholes and Pavements.
She said, “We can all agree on a few things: we want safer, quieter streets, cleaner air, cheaper transport options, places where children can be independent, and ways for older people to stay mobile and healthy for longer by staying active.
“Happily, it’s not super complicated, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The Frome to Radstock link is now even more tantalisingly close to completion. I urge you to support Frome’s Missing Links campaign to make it happen.”
